As a lifelong wrestling fan who grew up with the thrill of Saturday morning cartoons and late-night pay-per-view events, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I welcome the new era of wrestling entertainment on streaming platforms. The news that AEW is finally joining Max and WWE is shifting to Netflix feels like a natural progression for the sport that has always been at the forefront of innovation in the world of entertainment.
As someone who has struggled with the constraints of cable and satellite subscriptions, I can appreciate the convenience of being able to access my favorite wrestling content on-demand. The slow rollout may be a bit disappointing for some fans, but as Tony Khan himself said, this move will open up new possibilities for those who have yet to experience the excitement of AEW.
The first episode of AEW Dynamite on Max looks promising with Julia Hart’s return match against Jamie Hayter and CM Punk’s long-awaited matchup with Seth Rollins on Netflix’s WWE Raw. I can hardly contain my anticipation for these exciting matches, and the added convenience of streaming only adds to the excitement.
I remember back in the day, wrestling fans had to wait weeks or even months to rewatch their favorite matches. Now, we have access to a vast library of past episodes and pay-per-views at our fingertips. It’s a testament to how far the sport has come, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for wrestling on streaming platforms.
And let me tell you, if they ever decide to stream wrestling in virtual reality, I might just have to invest in one of those fancy headsets! Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to watch matches from the ring itself someday. Now that would be something to talk about!
Now that 2025 is here, it’s time for AEW and WWE’s transition to streaming.
Starting January 1st, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) will make its debut on the Max platform for the first time since its establishment six years ago. The app will now host their entire collection of shows, with episodes of AEW Dynamite from 2019 and various pay-per-views currently available. For quite some time, fans have been eagerly awaiting a streaming agreement for AEW. While both AEW and Warner Bros. Discovery have emphasized that the rollout will be gradual, this move certainly marks an exciting beginning.
Starting on January 6th, you can stream “WWE Raw” on Netflix, but don’t worry if you can’t wait for fresh content! There are plenty of shows available to keep you entertained, such as the “Best of Raw 2024”, the “RAW Vault”, and “RAW Classics”, among others.
According to AEW President Tony Khan, shifting AEW from TBS and TNT to a new platform won’t significantly alter how long-time fans consume the content, but it does pave the way for attracting new viewers who have recently dropped their cable subscriptions. Essentially, this move provides an avenue to engage with wrestling enthusiasts who have been following on TBS and TNT for a while, as well as those who can continue to do so in the future.
Additionally, it hints at the upcoming era of professional wrestling. Professional wrestling has always been a pioneer in the realm of entertainment, spanning broadcast TV, cable TV, satellite, closed-circuit pay-per-view, and still dominating pay-per-view today. Considering the various platforms for professional wrestling, streaming seems to be the wave of the future for all forms of entertainment. It’s crucial that AEW establishes a strong presence in this sector.
On Max, the inaugural episode of AEW Dynamite features a rematch for Julia Hart against Jamie Hayter, a follow-up match between “Hangman” Adam Page and Orange Cassidy stemming from Worlds End, a clash between The Hurt Syndicate and The Acclaimed, an update from Jeff Jarrett, and much more.
In the premiere episode of WWE Raw on Netflix, viewers can anticipate a top-tier performance, particularly regarding the lineup. For the first time ever, CM Punk and Seth Rollins are set to engage in a wrestling match. Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa will clash over the Ula Fala relic and the position of Tribal Chief. Furthermore, Rhea Ripley will take on Liv Morgan in a challenge. Lastly, Drew McIntyre will face off against Jey Uso in a one-on-one contest.
