Following several cryptic hints over the past few weeks, the enigmatic NXT supergroup was set to make their long-awaited appearance during NXT Vengeance Day. As darkness fell, they unexpectedly rose from the audience, attacking FraXiom first, then later returning to eliminate Oba Femi too. The debut was undeniably grand, yet reactions among WWE fans were mixed, with many questioning its execution and even questioning the group’s appeal overall. Some have drawn comparisons to Retribution and The Shield.
The team, as yet unnamed, consists of Cutler James, Dion Lennox, Saquon Shugars, and Osiris Griffin. Although they continue to wear masks, occasional glimpses reveal their features. Their tactics seem heavily influenced by the Retribution playbook, with frequent power outages, masked appearances, surprise attacks, and veiled identities.
Some express cautious hope, similar to @TruecrimeP, who tweeted, “I sure hope Retribution 2.0 isn’t happening!!!”; while @Brock900_ shows skepticism towards the team, asking, “Is Slapjack, T-Bar, Mace, and Reckoning part of the same group as before? I guess that’s who LOL.”
As a movie enthusiast, I wasn’t convinced by their performance either. I penned down my thoughts as “unofficial payback” instead. Meanwhile, @Jaydenx00 likened them to a renowned troupe, saying “In 2025, they’re an insanely convincing imitation of the Gang.” @iTzVega wrote, “They seem to believe they are the Shield 2.0, but they’re actually Retribution 2.0 in disguise.” Lastly, @Dee_Banks589 wrote, “They’re pretending to be Retribution 2.0, but there’s no way they could be trying to emulate the Shield… I appreciate their effort, but yes, indeed.”
Reignsandmox is doubtful it will succeed in the end, which can also be expressed as ‘This idea seems ludicrous and I don’t think it’ll ever pan out, just like its predecessors; both failed before it.’ ”
“@MrTDW_ made another witty remark comparing the Shield to an item bought off TEMU, such as ‘When you order the Shield from TEMU’.
The brief-lived faction known as Retribution had ambitious plans to disrupt the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), causing turmoil on Monday Night Raw for several weeks. However, their leader, Mustafa Ali, and the entire group’s impact didn’t last long. Now, with everyone associated with that storyline either leaving WWE or undergoing a change in character, it’s easy to see why such comparisons might be concerning.
