WWE Hall of Famer Is "Hoping" for a Match on John Cena's Retirement Tour

As a long-time fan of professional wrestling and John Cena in particular, I was thrilled to see him return to the WWE ring at Money in the Bank. His announcement that 2025 would be his final year as a wrestler came as a surprise, but it’s a bittersweet moment for me as I’ve grown up watching Cena dominate the scene.

At the “Money in the Bank” event, John Cena made a surprise return to a WWE ring for the first time since April following “WrestleMania 40.” The crowd erupted in excitement upon seeing the 13-time World Champion. However, he had an important announcement to make. A few months prior, Cena shared his desire to put his acting career on hold and return to wrestling for one last hurrah. Nevertheless, fans didn’t anticipate that this would happen so soon. Cena then announced that the upcoming year will be his last as a professional wrestler, and he plans to make it a sort of farewell tour. To conclude his speech, he called out any wrestlers in the locker room who wanted a match, stating now was the perfect opportunity.

Several former and current wrestlers expressed their desire to wrestle Cena in the ring before he retires. One of these contenders is Joe Hendry from TNA, who feels confident that they will face each other soon. Apart from a few matches at the beginning of his career, Hendry has spent his entire WWE tenure and hasn’t had the opportunity to compete against opponents from outside promotions in those “dream” matches. Some past opponents have also stepped forward, such as WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam.

Rob Van Dam Wants One Last Match with John Cena

As a gamer, I can imagine it like this: “I’ve shared the ring with Van Dam and Cena multiple times throughout our wrestling careers, but the showdown at Hammerstein Ballroom remains one of my all-time favorites. With its historic walls hosting GCW in 2022, I can’t help but crave a rematch against Cena. During an interview on the 1 Of A Kind podcast, I expressed my excitement about potential repeat of our epic ECW One Night Stand match from 2006. Believe me, I’m confident that I could still deliver that performance.”

For an extended period, Cena held the number one spot in the wrestling world. During my tenure, he reigned supreme, and his position was well-deserved. His ability to connect with the crowd and engage them was exceptional. Facing a hostile and vocal crowd that vehemently disapproved of him was a given. However, Cena was prepared for this challenge and handled it admirably, making my collaboration with him an enjoyable experience. (Paraphrased from Wrestling Inc.)

In their previous encounter, which took place at a WWE Live event in 2014, Van Dam and Cena fought against The Wyatt Family in a multi-person match. Van Dam continues to wrestle actively, having competed most recently against Isiah Kassidy, Komander, and Lee Johnson in AEW in April. Meanwhile, Cena shared his future aspirations, mentioning that 2025 is an ideal year for him to retire from wrestling.
