WWE Reveals Name Change for Mariah May

Last week, the NXT Women’s Division experienced a significant change with WWE’s recent free agent signing – the arrival of former AEW World Women’s Champion, Mariah May. Her introduction was highly anticipated, drawing a strong response from the audience. Impressively, she managed to make a powerful impact without even uttering her name, leaving fans guessing if she would retain Mariah May or adopt a new moniker in WWE. However, we now have our answer, and it’s quite fitting.

Previously known as “The Glamour” in AEW, May appears to be embracing this nickname more fully and immersing herself deeper into its classic Hollywood glamor aesthetic in her appearances on NXT so far.

Her initial storyline, broadcasted on tonight’s NXT, made it even clearer. It featured a more classic Hollywood-style animated version of her, hinting at I Dream of Jeannie influences. For the month of May, she donned another elegant white ensemble, and this aligns perfectly with her brand new stage name. From now on, May will be known as Blake Monroe.

Mariah May Mead was originally her given name, but similar to Ricky Starks, WWE wanted to give her a unique identity. From now on, she’ll be known as Blake Monroe, which aligns well with the essence and style of her character. The resemblance to Marilyn Monroe is evident, and Blake Monroe exudes the same Hollywood glamour in a fitting manner. Although a name change wasn’t necessary, Blake Monroe seems perfectly suited for her character’s development, making it an excellent choice.

There’s some variation in whether a free agent decides to change their name when they join a new league, as there are instances where they’ve kept their original names and others where they haven’t. For example, Ethan Page didn’t change his name upon joining NXT, while Cody Rhodes and Jade Cargill chose to keep their names when they joined WWE (or in Rhodes’ case, returned). Similarly, Jordynne Grace kept her name after leaving TNA for WWE, as did Stephanie Vaquer and Giulia.
