WWE vs. AEW: Another First-Ever Head-to-Head Ratings War Goes Down Tonight

As a long-time wrestling enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of NXT from its humble beginnings to its current status as a powerhouse brand, I am thrilled to see it stepping out on its own on The CW. The debut episode’s viewership numbers were impressive, and now, with AEW Dynamite joining the fray, we are in for an unparalleled night of action.

The era of WWE NXT on The CW has begun. This month, WWE moved its developmental program to The CW, giving WWE NXT independence for the first time in its 10-year history. Until October 2024, WWE NXT was broadcast on WWE Network and USA Network, which benefited from more mainstream WWE offerings such as monthly pay-per-view events and WWE Monday Night Raw. Now, WWE NXT stands alone on The CW, as this network does not carry any other WWE content apart from the newly named silver and black brand. So far, WWE NXT has thrived, attracting 895,000 viewers in its first episode, significantly surpassing the half-million viewer figure that The CW’s executives were reportedly content with.

WWE NXT Battles AEW Dynamite in First-Ever CW vs. TBS Battle

One week later, WWE NXT faces head-to-head competition.

Tonight’s “AEW Dynamite” is their annual “Title Tuesday” event, a special occasion that shifts the usual Thursday evening broadcast to the same time as “WWE NXT.” This means that half of “AEW Dynamite” will air simultaneously with “WWE NXT,” starting at 8 PM ET, while “AEW Dynamite” begins at 9 PM ET.

Last year at this time, WWE NXT and AEW Dynamite competed directly against each other. In an attempt to make their shows more spectacular, both organizations pulled out all the stops. WWE invited big-name stars like John Cena, The Undertaker, Cody Rhodes, and Paul Heyman for special appearances, while AEW featured Adam Copeland’s first match and what was later announced as the main event of AEW ALL IN: London 2024 between Swerve Strickland and Bryan Danielson. In the end, WWE NXT came out on top in this competition, attracting 921,000 viewers compared to AEW Dynamite‘s 609,000.

Previously, the weekly viewership contests between WWE NXT and AEW Dynamite were quite intense, as they went head-to-head in the Wednesday night primetime slot for a stretch of 18 months. In this competition, AEW Dynamite emerged victorious most weeks, with only one exception.
