Tonight on WWE SmackDown, it was confirmed that Kevin Owens has been dealing with a serious neck injury that requires surgery. This means he’ll be out of action for some time and won’t be able to compete in WrestleMania 41 against Randy Orton as planned. Although the exact return date is uncertain, Owens emphasized his appreciation for this opportunity to rest and recover. Our thoughts are with him during this difficult period, hoping he recovers swiftly.
Nick Aldis, as SmackDown’s General Manager, called upon Owens and allowed him to speak. “I’ve spent a quarter of a century in this business,” Owens declared, “and I can honestly assert that I poured every ounce of myself into every match I fought.” He went on to discuss the physical toll these years in the ring have taken on him, as well as the inherent dangers associated with such a profession.
For such an outstanding chance, there’s a cost – it can strain our bodies. Everyone else in that group has already paid that cost, and it looks like I’m next,” Owens stated.
Over the past four months, Owens has been grappling with a severe neck problem that we initially didn’t fully understand. However, we’ve managed to diagnose it now, and I’m scheduled for neck surgery. To add insult to injury, the timing couldn’t be more unfortunate because being sidelined at WrestleMania instead of facing Randy Orton is truly disappointing.
Kevin Owens expressed his gratitude to WWE for allowing him to speak here today, as he’s unsure when he’ll get another opportunity like this. He’s learned not to take things for granted and will never underestimate this moment. For now, all he wants to do is say thank you and apologize.
Later on, Orton stepped forward to deal with Owens, leaving you wondering how this situation would unfold given their history from the previous twelve months. Orton momentarily paused to gather his thoughts before stepping into the ring, but Owens leaped out of the ring and began walking up the ramp.
Afterwards, Aldis expressed his displeasure but felt it necessary to mention that due to recent events, Orton was no longer eligible for a match at WrestleMania. Orton paused, placing his hands on his head, before delivering an RKO to Aldis. Orton gazed towards the WrestleMania sign and exited the ring.
It appears quite probable that WWE will pair Orton with a fitting rival at WrestleMania, given his history of participating in this event. A sudden change in his storyline is possible, but it might be challenging to execute it well within the remaining time. An intriguing possibility could be WWE inserting Orton into the Cody Rhodes and John Cena narrative, further developing the tension hinted at between Rhodes and Orton, leading to a potential confrontation.
It’s more probable that WWE might bring in an outsider to challenge Orton, and the person who has been hinted at for weeks is Aleister Black. His comeback was initially planned after WrestleMania, but due to the injury causing adjustments, there’s a chance we could see Black return prematurely to square off against Owens. Another possibility could be Rusev making his return to fight Orton, but it remains to be seen if this materializes.
