As a gamer with years of experience navigating through the digital landscape, I must admit, I was both excited and apprehensive about Netflix taking over Monday Night Raw. The thought of live streaming wrestling matches on such a massive platform was intriguing, but the technical glitches during the Tyson vs Paul fight made me pause.
Triple H admitted that there was a delay in the stream because he was watching it while on a plane. He expected this issue due to the flight’s altitude and the fact that the signal can sometimes be unreliable at such heights.
After noticing everyone discussing it online that it was buffering, you’d start to understand the challenge of having 60 million homes simultaneously using a streaming service. If our initial broadcast buffers and they report around 60-70 million households watching, I would be content with the buffering, Triple H stated.
Starting early next year, Netflix is set to assume control over Monday Night Raw, marking a significant move into live programming for the streaming platform. Previously, Netflix has dabbled in live events such as comedy specials and roasts, but the highly anticipated Tyson vs Paul fight stands out as their most ambitious endeavor yet, attracting over 60 million viewers and peaking at an astonishing 65 million viewers. To put this into perspective, the Tom Brady Roast only managed to draw in a maximum of 1.8 million viewers.
It turned out that there were problems associated with it, but Netflix managed to tackle those issues at the same time as they acknowledged and praised the high viewership. On X, Netflix posted, “A staggering 60 million households worldwide tuned in live for Paul vs. Tyson! This boxing spectacle ruled social media, broke records, and pushed our streaming systems to their limits.
In simpler terms, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg shared information about an email written by Netflix’s Chief Technology Officer to their staff. The email talked about the problems with streaming, but also highlighted the large-scale achievement and success of a recent event. It also mentioned conversations happening online about the technical difficulties they faced.
The report states that the email said, “The massive size of this undertaking led to numerous technical difficulties. However, the launch team admirably prioritized maintaining the stability of the stream for most viewers. While it’s clear there have been issues with quality as discussed in media and social platforms, we don’t want to underestimate the challenges faced by some users. We acknowledge there’s room for improvement, but overall, we view this event as a tremendous success.
Here’s hoping that the challenges encountered during Raw’s Netflix stint aren’t indicative of future difficulties, and it’s likely that Netflix will learn valuable lessons from this struggle to ensure a smoother release in the future.
