Caution: This article discloses SPOILERS for Thunderbolts*. It turns out that the actor portraying John Walker in Thunderbolts*, Wyatt Russell, initially didn’t deliver Captain America‘s famous line in Jake Schreier’s MCU film. In the storyline, as the Thunderbolts team members collaborate to exit Val’s vault, Walker adopts a more confrontational stance than his counterparts and destroys the generator powering the vault’s security system. Walker delivers a line that might be seen as an Easter egg for Thunderbolts* fans, since he warns his comrades with, “watch out on your left” – a phrase that initiated Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson’s close bond in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
In an interview with EW, Wyatt Russell, who stars in Thunderbolts, disclosed that John Walker’s famous line “on your left” wasn’t initially part of the movie. Director Jake Schreier inserted this line during post-production, reportedly to provide a bit of extra dialogue when John Walker takes over, as he felt it was necessary to fill a gap. Wyatt Russell also mentioned that he didn’t want to say that particular line. Whether the line was added as a nod to Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson remains unclear. Here are Wyatt Russell’s comments:
(*Note: Thunderbolts is not an actual movie, it is used as an example)
I wasn’t keen on uttering that phrase. In post-production, Jake Schreier felt it necessary for us to add some dialogue. This was additional dialogue added later. It doesn’t relate to the rest of what was said at all. It was merely a placeholder to fill an empty spot.
What Wyatt Russell’s Captain America Line Comments Mean For Thunderbolts*
Thunderbolts*’ Captain America Line Shows The Difference Between John Walker And The MCU’s Previous Two Captain Americas
In their shared history, the phrase “On your left” became a humorous inside joke between Steve and Sam, stemming from Steve teasing Sam about his running speed during their initial encounter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Later, when Sam used this exact line to signify the resurrection of everyone after Hulk’s second snap in Avengers: Endgame, it served as a powerful symbol of unity and solidarity among the Avengers. Notably, being the first voice Steve heard from his fellow Avengers upon their revival may have influenced Steve’s decision to hand over the mantle of Captain America to Sam, reinforcing the deep bond that exists between these two heroes.
In the same vein as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier subtly compares Steve Rogers and John Walker through Walker’s killing of a Flag-Smasher, it appears that Thunderbolts could be drawing a parallel between John Walker and Steve Rogers by using the phrase “on your left.” Whereas Steve and Sam use it as friendly banter, Walker employs it more as a caution. Director Jake Schreier might have devised this idea to add depth or intrigue to the scene where he sought to fill a narrative gap.
