Wyre Returns: The X-Men Villain We Haven’t Seen in 30 Years is Back with a Vengeance!

After wrapping up their recent internal conflict known as “X-Manhunt”, the X-Men find themselves facing an old enemy with a fierce desire for revenge. This villain has been absent for more than three decades, and now returns to wreak havoc. The “X-Manhunt” event affected all X-Men titles, culminating in Charles Xavier and Lilandra of the Shi’ar Empire leaving Earth to save their daughter, Xandra. With Cyclops leading the team, the X-Men return to their base in Alaska. There, a young girl who claims to be a mutant has mysteriously vanished. As the X-Men step in to help, they become targets of an adversary who is hostile towards mutants and eager for a comeback, as revealed in X-Men #14.

Note: Spoilers for X-Men #14 follow.

In issue #14 of the X-Men comic series, the creative team consists of Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, Marte Gracia, and VC’s Clayton Cowles. The girl who went missing is named Piper Cobb. Despite her belief that she possesses mutant abilities, the X-Men have yet to find any proof to support this claim. Cyclops dispatches Kid Omega on a rescue mission in a small vessel, while a newly discovered mutant named Jennifer Starkey employs her newfound powers for the same purpose. As Piper and Temper had formed a bond, Temper feels anger towards the X-Men for returning Piper to her anti-mutant mother, potentially placing her in danger.

Unbeknownst to the X-Men, they’re under the surveillance of a member from a secretive organization called the 3K. This enigmatic group has been kidnapping humans and coercively triggering latent mutant abilities within them. Among their ranks is Cassandra Nova, a formidable adversary known from Deadpool & Wolverine stories. In a series of brief encounters, we catch glimpses of this unnamed character. He’s bare-chested and adorned with ammunition belts, exhibiting an intimidating physique and unusually sharp teeth. The climactic moment arrives in a sprawling panel as the figure is revealed to be Wyre once more.

Meet Wyre, the X-Men’s forgotten villain

Introduced by Simon Furman and Pat Broderick in Alpha Flight #114 of 1992, Wyre is a character you might not recall if you’re an avid X-Men reader. Despite his infrequent appearances and short tenure, he’s a unique figure. Genetically enhanced with tendrils covering his entire physique, Wyre initially targeted Alpha Flight member Wild Child but later collaborated with the team on occasion.

Despite earlier allegiances with the X-Men’s associate group, Wyre seems to have reverted to his evil self in X-Men #14. Wyre gunned down Quentin Quire as he was about to reach Piper Cobb. However, before losing consciousness, Quentin managed to transmit a telepathic message to the X-Men with Piper’s location. The issue concludes without further mention of Wyre, but it appears he will clash with the remaining X-Men in the next installment.

As a movie buff diving into the thrilling world of X-Men, I found myself initially embarking on a straightforward search and rescue operation. However, things have taken an unexpected turn, with the mission now encompassing not just the X-Men but the entire town of Merle hanging in the balance!

In this issue #15, it seems that a sinister force, known as 3K, has emerged from the shadows for the first time. Their ominous intentions are clear: to advance their twisted agenda at any cost. The question now is, will Wyre – their appointed executioner – quench his insatiable thirst for blood by targeting the X-Men?

This tantalizing cliffhanger leaves us on the edge of our seats, eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this gripping saga.

It’s likely not a mere coincidence that Alpha Flight reappeared in X-Men #12. An exclusive sneak peek from ComicBook reveals that the team has a new commander or supervisor in this issue, who goes by Agent Arsenault and assumes the title Vindicator.
