As a passionate film enthusiast diving into the world of Marvel comics, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the unraveling of the enigma surrounding the new X-Force team. Launched as part of X-Men: From the Ashes, this publishing initiative marked the beginning of a fresh start for the entire X-Men comic line post-Krakoa era.
Under the leadership of Forge, this X-Force team is on a mission to tackle global catastrophes before they occur. One enigmatic member of this group, code-named Tank, has been shrouded in secrecy… until now!
Attention, fellow readers: Here be spoilers for X-Force #10, aka Legacy #300.
In the tenth issue of X-Force, the plot is crafted by Geoffrey Thorne, Marcus To, Erick Arciniega, and VC’s Joe Caramagna. They engage in a battle against a new adversary, an alchemist terrorist known as La Diabla, along with her group, The Solution. La Diabla has been causing global catastrophes, and among her team is a X-Man named Colossus. However, it’s eventually revealed that this isn’t the real Colossus, but a shapeshifter called Zanda. Later, Forge departs with La Diabla to aid her in constructing a resonator. This device is intended for use by Moses Magnum, who plans to annihilate humanity, including mutants.
Fortunately, the remaining members of X-Force showed up at the nick of time. Without delay, Tank swiftly removes his facemask, unveiling his real persona as Piotr Rasputin, more famously known as Colossus.
It seems that Colossus has been disguised within X-Force, playing a fictional character whose true identity remains unexplained. Maybe it was to maintain an enigma among the X-Force members, or perhaps he took over Tank’s role as another X-Man at the last moment, with the creative team deciding to include Colossus instead due to his absence from the X-Men roster since the “From the Ashes” storyline.
In the latest X-Force installment, Colossus has once again taken up the role of a hero. Previously, he was portrayed as an antagonist in the limited series Wolverine: Revenge by Jonathan Hickman and Greg Capullo. This storyline saw Colossus’ son, Nikolai, who shares his father’s mutant ability to transform his body into metal, seeking vengeance against Wolverine for a past tragedy. Years ago, Wolverine had killed Nikolai’s father, and now Nikolai was working with a handicapped Sabretooth to exact revenge. However, in the end, Wolverine manipulated the situation to make Nikolai believe he had killed Logan, which was intended to help Nikolai find peace and move past his desire for vengeance.
Regarding Colossus and X-Force, they manage to defeat La Diabla, safeguard the world, and miraculously revive their comrade, Surge. Surge is now a being of pure plasma energy and is once again among the living. However, we don’t get a glimpse into Surge’s future path. Instead, the remaining members of X-Force inform Forge that they are all choosing to resign following the hardships he has imposed upon them.
Additionally, this edition of X-Force marks its conclusion at issue #300, a significant milestone for the series. Despite the popularity of the brand and the team, it’s likely that a new volume of X-Force will emerge somewhere down the line.
