X-Men '97 Creator Beau DeMayo Claims Marvel "Stripped" Season 2 Credits Over Instagram Post

As a seasoned gamer and ardent Marvel fan, I must say that the recent turn of events surrounding Beau DeMayo and the X-Men ’97 series has left me utterly bewildered and disheartened. Having grown up with the original 90s animated series, it was a dream come true to see this beloved franchise reimagined for a modern audience.

Back in January, I, as a Marvel enthusiast, was left reeling when, mere days before the launch of the hotly anticipated animated X-Men ’97 series, Marvel Studios announced that our beloved showrunner, Beau DeMayo, had been let go. At the time, specifics about this sudden shift were scarce, but now DeMayo himself is speaking out. In a social media post on Thursday, he revealed that he received a letter from Marvel on June 13, informing him that his Season 2 credits would be taken away due to an Instagram post I shared in support of Pride Month just days prior. He also shared the controversial post and expressed his gratitude for having been part of X-Men ’97, hinting at more revelations to come.

Initially, I’m deeply appreciative for my involvement in #XMen97, as I got to work alongside incredibly gifted individuals. Bringing this reboot to life was a long-cherished aspiration, and the fan response has been heartwarming. Nevertheless, given my recent departure from the project, I feel it’s necessary to express my thoughts. – DeMayo expressed.

1st off, I’m incredibly thankful for being part of #XMen97, where I got to work alongside some truly exceptional people. Reviving this series was a long-held dream, and the fan reaction has been heartwarming. But now, since I’ve departed from the project, it feels necessary for me to share my thoughts…

As a passionate X-Men fan and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve always felt a strong connection to the characters who embodied diversity and acceptance. My love for these iconic superheroes led me to work on the X-Men: The Animated Series (XMen97) and Blade, two shows that hold a special place in my heart.

Reports emerged in March about the termination of DeMayo, creator and executive producer of X-Men ’97. DeMayo had previously worked as a writer-producer for Marvel’s live-action series Moon Knight and as a scriptwriter for the Blade reboot. At the time, he was also wrapping up work on the second season of X-Men ’97 and had plans to develop a third season. Later, Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios and executive producer on X-Men ’97, expressed that he couldn’t disclose specifics but acknowledged DeMayo’s deep affection for the characters and praised his “outstanding scripts” as a source of inspiration for the production team. Winderbaum also stated that he preferred to say they had “parted ways” rather than referring to it as a firing.

Regarding Season 2 of X-Men ’97, DeMayo has previously stated he can’t discuss much about it, but he’s eager to watch the finished product when it’s released. In July, it was revealed that Matthew Chauncey, who writes for Marvel’s What If…?, will be taking over as writer for the series instead.

Earlier this year, DeMayo stated that he wrote a considerable amount for Season 2, but unlike Season 1, he won’t be deeply engaged in or overseeing aspects such as production, casting, design, editing, post-production, music, and creative vision rewrites for the show. In simpler terms, while DeMayo played a significant role in writing for Season 2, he won’t have a hands-on role in various other aspects of the season’s production.

He continued, “That’s why I’ve been unable to discuss Season 2. However, I’m eagerly waiting to watch it with everyone when it comes out. I’m optimistic about the end result.”
