One frequently desired Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character is Nova, whose MCU entrance has been a topic of discussion for years. Last year, it was officially confirmed that Nova will finally appear in the MCU through an ongoing TV series development, but there have been past attempts to create a Nova series that didn’t reach the screen. Recently, Beau DeMayo, the former showrunner of X-Men ’97, shared details about his previous pitch for a character series blending aspects of the popular film Starship Troopers. After season 3 of X-Men ’97 was finished, he was in discussions to initiate development on this project.
In a recent conversation, X DeMayo admitted that he was the one who proposed a Starship Troopers concept. He clarified, “I can’t reveal all the details, but the Starship Troopers pitch I made was indeed true. At the time, I was involved in discussions about creating #Nova, once the production of X-Men ’97 Season 3 had concluded.
It was at this point that DeMayo disclosed his plan for his series would revolve around themes linked to Annihilation, one of Marvel’s most significant cosmic tales. He explained, “I envisioned the Annihilation Wave akin to the bugs in Starship Troopers, and I wanted to narrate the tale of the man who enlists in the military to win over a girl named Namorita. This story would follow a group of friends, gradually losing them as Rick and his companions face the gruesome realities of intergalactic conflict.
DeMayo wrote: “You contrast this with Rick discovering the Nova Corps employ propaganda similar to Starship Troopers for policing and controlling information in space, attempting to conceal the approaching Annihilation Wave. This leads Rick and his team to act independently, much like in Mission Impossible. He intended to adopt Veerhoven’s dark satirical approach, interjecting Nova Corp Bulletins that present a starkly different picture than what Rick and his allies experience, explaining why other heroes haven’t intervened, as the Nova Corps keeps them at bay.
DeMayo came up with a method to keep the budget in check and ensure the storyline remained consistent. “To prevent the budget from expanding excessively, I intended for Rick and his team to be stranded on an outer planet around episodes 3 or 4,” DeMayo wrote. “This planet is now mysteriously deserted and serves as a utopia turned ghost town that they must investigate. The atmosphere here is reminiscent of Pitch Black throughout the rest of the season, as they struggle to survive against Annihilus monsters while being picked off one by one. Meanwhile, Nova news bulletins continue to assure everyone that everything is under control.
In due course, Rick along with his fellow survivors realize that these fearsome insects are actually under the command of a superior bug named Annihilus. It’s been hidden from the public by the Nova Corps, but they knew about him all along. According to DeMayo’s writing, this revelation sets up Rick and his group in the second season to act independently as they pursue Annihilus before he reaches the central planets of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This situation can be likened to a blend between Starship Troopers and Mission Impossible, with Rick questioning who among the Nova Corps is trustworthy.
It’s clear that the project we were expecting isn’t happening right now, but there’s a new one in development – the Nova project. In a past interview with ComicBook, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, shared some insights about the future plans for Nova. He hinted that the show will air when they are completely satisfied with its quality and the overall concept.
Currently, Nova is being worked on. To be precise, we’re focusing more on development than production at this time. This is all part of the new era of Marvel, as shared by Winderbaum. However, it’s important to discuss Nova because there’s always a lot of excitement surrounding Marvel projects. We genuinely care about Nova and want to get it just right. At the moment, it’s in development. We have several projects in the pipeline, and we won’t proceed with a show until we’re completely satisfied with the pilot episode and the overall storyline, or what we call the ‘bible’. So, Nova is currently under development.
I’d love to hear your thoughts about the concept for Nova, and if you could share what aspects you’d like to see in a Nova series. Feel free to discuss anything Marvel-related with me over on Bluesky @knightofoa!
