As a dedicated fan who grew up with the ’90s X-Men animated series, I can confidently say that Emi/Emmett Younemura and Matthew Chauncey are doing an exceptional job with Season 3 of X-Men ’97 on Disney+. The energy between them is palpable, and it’s clear that the future of this beloved show is in capable hands.
Emi/Emmett Younemura, director of X-Men ’97, has expressed positive sentiments towards incoming showrunner Matthew Chauncey. In an interview with ScreenRant, the creative mind shared updates as work progresses on Season 3 of this popular Disney+ series. Recently, a writer from What If…? joined the team for X-Men ’97’s Season 3. Despite much of the planning for Season 2 being set by former showrunner Beau DeMayo, some fans had expressed concerns about the future of the project after Season 2. However, Marvel quickly renewed X-Men ’97 following a positive response from fans and internal enthusiasm about the animation division’s direction. Younemura wishes to reassure everyone that the show is in capable hands, with work already underway.
“He’s fantastic! I enjoy collaborating with him immensely. Although he’s fairly new, he demonstrates exceptional sweetness and writing skills, making our work environment enjoyable. Fans are in for a treat as they’ll get to witness the unique brilliance he brings to our projects.”
Keeping X-Men ’97 On Track
Absolutely, fans are eagerly anticipating that the style established in Season 1 will persist into Season 2 and beyond. ComicBook’s Phase Zero podcast spoke with Jake Castorena, the supervising director of X-Men ’97, about the more mature aspects that the series has successfully incorporated. For Castorena, these changes and themes were actually present in X-Men: The Animated Series as far back as the ’90s. Therefore, it makes sense that they had a foundation to build upon for continued development in the series.
To express it in a first-person perspective as a fan,
As a devoted fan, I can share an interesting insight: The director mentioned they’re refining their water techniques currently. Interestingly, one of their partners provided them with a special effects pass, but it was too polished for the desired effect. So, instead of using a high-tech approach with painted cards and two-frame cycles, they opted for a more rudimentary method, and to my delight, it worked wonderfully! It turns out, pushing against certain limitations actually helped them capture the authentic spirit of the original production more effectively.
