As a child of the 90s, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement at the return of my beloved X-Men! The revival of X-Men ’97 on Disney+ has taken me back to the days when I eagerly awaited each new episode. The fact that they are now releasing an official art book, X-Men ’97: The Art and Making of the Animated Series, is like getting a peek behind the curtain at the magic that brought my favorite mutants to life!

In my own words, I’d express it as: “As a fan, I called forth the mutants from the X-Men animated series of the 1990s – Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Gambit, Beast, Bishop, and Morph, along with Jean Grey, Jubilee, Sunspot, and new commander Magneto. With Marvel Animation’s Emmy-nominated reboot, X-Men ’97, these iconic X-Men returned to a fresh era.”

As an ardent fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as Marvel Studios continues to tease us with glimpses behind the scenes of the eagerly anticipated second and third seasons of their hit animated series. To keep us engaged in the meantime, they’ve unveiled a making-of documentary special on Disney+, and now they’re diving even deeper into the creation process with the official X-Men ’97: The Art and Making of the Animated Series book.

A 224-page hardcover book, published by Abrams Books, is set to hit the shelves on April 29, 2025. It’s priced at $50. You can pre-order it now on Amazon.

As a long-time fan of both the X-Men comic books and animated series, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of “The Art X-Men ’97”. Having grown up watching the original animated series in the late 90s, it holds a special place in my heart. The fact that this new series is being described as a spiritual sequel to the original and will feature returning cast members is music to my ears. I can’t wait to see how the revamped art style compares to the original, and to delve deeper into the process of creating this animated masterpiece. The inclusion of storyboards, character sketches, vehicle designs, new costumes, stills, animatic frames, cels, and more in this official behind-the-scenes art book is a dream come true for any X-Men fan. I can only imagine the wealth of knowledge and insight that will be gleaned from reading James Fields’ (The Art of The Batman) writing and executive producer Brad Winderbaum’s foreword. This art book is sure to be a must-have addition to any X-Men collection, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

Winderbaum stated that the first X-Men series from Marvel Studios is a notable beginning. He’s thrilled to reacquaint audiences with the X-Men by delving into one of the most significant periods in X-Men comic history, which was the ’90s. The distinctive style that originated from Chris Claremont and was further popularized by Jim Lee, and then showcased in The Animated Series, is being paid tribute to here.

Providing a sneak peek into the upcoming second season of X-Men ’97, Winderbaum shared with the Official Marvel Podcast: “We’ve got grand ambitions for season 2. I’ve already previewed all the draft animations, and we’re making excellent progress towards crafting something that matches or even surpasses the quality of the first season. The emotional journey from the first season persists, but it takes a uniquely X-Men turn in the second season.”

X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ’97 are available to stream now on Disney+.
