X-Men '97 Season 2 First Look Reveals Fan-Favorite Costumes, Villain Debuts

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has been following the X-Men since the ’90s, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming second season of X-Men ’97! The new costumes inspired by Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run and the introduction of villain Danger have me jumping with excitement. The expanded roster, featuring characters like Havok, Polaris, and even teasing a potential return for Gambit, is just the icing on the cake!

At D23, they kicked off with a flurry of announcements, giving us first glimpses at Incredibles 3, Dream Productions, Daredevil: Born Again, Skeleton Crew, and more. Today, the spotlight was on Marvel Animation within Disney, unveiling significant updates about the eagerly awaited second season of X-Men ’97. Marvel disclosed some intriguing details, such as the team adopting new costumes this season inspired by Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run, characterized by yellow and black jackets. Additionally, a new adversary was unmasked for the upcoming season – Danger.

An Expanded Roster

X-Men '97 Season 2 First Look Reveals Fan-Favorite Costumes, Villain Debuts

As a die-hard X-Men fan, I can’t contain my excitement! The original band from the first season is coming back (except for Gambit, for now), and they’re bringing along even more legendary characters from the franchise. The teaser already gave us a sneak peek at some familiar faces like Havok and Polaris, and if last season’s finale is any indication, Apocalypse will play a significant role in season 2. It’s also possible that this could be the way we get Gambit back, considering he was one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen in the comics at some point. I can hardly wait to see how it all unfolds!

New Costumes

In my gaming world, I can’t help but notice the fresh looks of our X-Men squad, and it feels like Grant Morrison’s iconic New X-Men run has been the blueprint. The man behind the show, Beau DeMayo, has spilled the beans about these new duds, explaining their selection for season 2. On his Twitter, he penned down, “When it comes to costume changes, I always let the story guide my decisions, and the themes we’ll delve into this season. These suits have a profound connection with Genosha and E is for Extinction. #xmen97”

In a significant shift from the vibrant spandex attire fans were accustomed to, the new X-Men costumes now sport black and yellow jackets and pants for most team members, with Emma Frost being an exception. During the first season, the X-Men underwent a transformation in appearance towards its end, transitioning from ’90s designs to costumes inspired by earlier character interpretations. The show continues to progress along this costume timeline, suggesting that more alterations in their looks may occur throughout the current season.

Trying to Not Ruin the Cake

In a conversation with the Phase Zero Podcast, Jake Castorena discussed the approach to producing season 2 of the popular series and maintaining the same exceptional quality as season 1. “We don’t want to spoil a dessert,” Castorena expressed. “I certainly don’t want to spoil a dessert. Let us make it instead,” he added. “The dessert is already in progress, being prepared and created at this moment. I suppose there’s no time for a break. To put it another way, we jumped straight into Season 2 while still working on Season 1!”

As a gamer, I understand that teamwork is key and we’ve learned to set ourselves self-imposed boundaries to double-check our calculations, be they mathematical equations or geographical considerations. We’ve deliberately restricted ourselves to stay true to the roots of the original game (OG show), but at the same time, we’re aiming to bring something new and refreshing yet familiar to the table.
