X-Men ’97’s Jennifer Hale Talks Tackling Marvel’s Most Complicated Story in Season 2

Back in the day, I was thrilled to discover that X-Men ’97 has grown into one of the most popular animated series on Disney+, and it’s easy to see why! The Marvel mutants have consistently delivered some of their best work within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it’s no wonder that not only a second season but also a third has been greenlit. Just recently, I was fortunate enough to sit down with Jennifer Hale, the talented voice behind Jean Grey and Madelyne Pryor, to discuss season two and her approach to adapting one of the most intricate X-Men storylines ever created. Let me tell you, diving into Cable’s origin story is going to be quite a challenge when X-Men ’97 comes back!

Refreshing my memory on the nail-biting finale of X-Men ’97’s first season: I recall Scott Summers and Jean Grey being thrust into the future, leaving a significant chunk of the X-Men stranded in time. Later on, they encounter a futuristic group called “The Askani,” who play a crucial role in raising Nathaniel Grey, also known as Cable. While Cable is indeed Scott’s son, it’s important to note that he isn’t Jean’s biological child but rather the offspring of her clone Madelyne. This storyline, if the series follows the comic books closely, is packed with intricate details and moving pieces, making it one of the X-Men saga’s most complex tales to date.

Raising Cable

In her approach to playing her role in the second season, Hale mentioned that she dives headfirst into the complex storyline and prepares to assist in raising Cable. To ensure she stays true to the vision of the creative team within this intricate universe, she puts on blinders, focusing only on their desires for this specific interpretation. With the script for season two, she fully immerses herself in the universe, although knowing other pieces like the source material can be helpful, she wants to avoid straying from the reality that the creators are aiming for.

Hale elaborated on portraying both Jean and Madelyne in the recent series, stating, “They originate from the same source, and it’s time to give a shout-out to our voice director Meredith Lane. One reason I was able to delve deeply into these characters is that Meredith is there, giving me the freedom to explore as much as possible in one direction while keeping me grounded. This allows me to perform freely because she is present.

Although a release date for X-Men ’97 hasn’t been announced yet, production is moving forward on the next installment of Marvel’s animated X-Men series. The Askani storyline and several unresolved mysteries from the final episode of season one could pave the way for a sequel that surpasses the premiere.
