X-MEN: APOCALYPSE’S RETURN

30 years ago, the storyline leading to the X-Men’s Age of Apocalypse started with the six-part series known as “Legion Quest”. This epic crossover event took place across issues in X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, and Cable, penned by Jeph Loeb. The X-Men traveled 20 years back in time to prevent Magneto’s death at the hands of Legion, Charles Xavier’s son. In X-Men #41 (1994), written by Fabian Nicieza and illustrated by Andy Kubert and Ron Garney, Xavier intended to kill Magneto to create a better future, but ended up sacrificing himself to save his friend and future adversary. This act set off a chain reaction that reshaped the timeline.

The very same problem sparked the initiation of ancient mutant En Sabah Nur, also known as Apocalypse, to activate his schemes. “The process of ascension starts now,” declared Apocalypse from the obscurity of past events. “Let the strongest prevail through the test.

The age of Xavier’s X-Men was over. The Age of Apocalypse had begun.

In a different reality, Magneto paid tribute to Xavier by establishing the X-Men. Meanwhile, Bishop was the sole X-Man who retained memories of the original Marvel Universe timeline. Simultaneously, Apocalypse ruled over North America through his Horsemen, embodying his survival-of-the-fittest ideology. Magneto’s X-Men sought to alter the past and prevent the Age of Apocalypse from emerging in this new timeline.

The timeline is shifting again, as depicted in Giant-Size Age of Apocalypse #1 – one of five new Giant-Size X-Men one-shots that revisit and alter significant moments in mutant history. This five-part event kicks off with Giant-Size X-Men #1 (written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, illustrated by Adam Kubert) in May, followed by Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1 and Giant-Size Age of Apocalypse #1 (both also written by Kelly & Lanzing and illustrated by Kubert and C.F. Villa respectively) in June.

Mark Loeb, who previously wrote issues set within the Age of Apocalypse series such as Astonishing X-Men and X-Man, will revisit this era in one of the ongoing Revelations backup stories found within Giant-Size Age of Apocalypse #1. He’ll collaborate with artist Simone di Meo, known for his work on DC’s Batman and Robin.

Back in 1995, I felt incredibly fortunate to be involved in one of the most monumental events for the X-Men – “Age of Apocalypse.” During that time, I was responsible for crafting not just one but two X-Men series: “Astonishing X-Men” and “X-Man.” Thirty years later, I invite you to revisit this devastated reality alongside me and the rising star in art, Simone Di Meo. We’ll be delving back into this timeline with some of the most iconic X-Men characters ever!

After the occurrences of last year’s Timeslide #1, where Cable and Bishop uncovered a danger to mutant survival, the new mutant Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel is traversing over half a century of enormous-sized issues of X-Men comics. Suddenly, she gets drawn into the past by Legion.

Each of the five special anniversary issues, such as the upcoming “Giant-Size House of M” #1 and “Giant-Size X-Men” #2, will contain “Revelations.” These are additional stories that uncover secret histories behind each tale, which will lay the groundwork for current events in Marvel’s newly revamped X-titles.
