On May 26, 2025 at 3:47 PM Eastern Time, it was revealed that James Marsden will reprise his role as Cyclops in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers: Doomsday.
Following numerous hours that some online viewers labeled as one of the dullest and longest Marvel announcement videos in a while, something unexpected emerged from the monotony: the official announcement that Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romjin, and Ian McKellen will reprise their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This means the X-Men are now officially part of the MCU.
Indeed, you’ve got it spot on! Amidst a flood of C-grade intros and uncomfortable self-promotion, the news that these five seasoned actors are stepping back into their legendary X-Men personas was a breath of fresh air for us die-hard fans. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love this world of cinema so much!

On X’s live broadcast, the event presents a single camera focusing on a tranquil stage adorned with director’s chairs. Every 15 minutes or so, the camera makes a dramatic sweep to unveil another chair bearing a new name—either unknown, ordinary, or puzzling to most. The pacing is agonizingly slow, delivering content at a rate more fitting for avant-garde performances than for a multibillion-dollar entertainment conglomerate.

For decades, Patrick Stewart has been widely recognized as the ultimate Professor X, playing the head of the X-Men since the initial X-Men film in the 2000s. His portrayal infused the franchise with weight, wisdom, and a hint of Shakespearean command. Stewart revisited the character on various occasions throughout Fox’s X-Men movie series and made a recent, impactful comeback in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The announcement of his return sparked excitement among fans, as Marvel even played the classic theme tune from the 90s X-Men animated show, adding to the nostalgic feelings of longtime admirers.
Kelsey Grammer first appeared playing the intelligent and fur-covered Dr. Hank McCoy, better recognized as Beast, in “X-Men: The Last Stand”. Although the movie received mixed reviews, Grammer’s portrayal was praised for its depiction of both the character’s grace and hidden aggression. He made a brief reappearance in “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, and most recently showed up as a completely computer-generated Beast in the post-credits scene of “The Marvels”, hinting at more X-Men involvement in the MCU.

In addition to them, we’ve got Sir Ian McKellen stepping in, set to reprise his role as Magneto once more. McKellen’s portrayal of this magnet master was filled with weight, threat, and intricacy, making him one of Marvel’s most memorable adversaries for Professor X, played by Stewart. Fans have loved the tension between these two characters since McKellen first appeared in X-Men. His return not only boosts the historical allure but also stirs up a dose of nostalgia amidst the fragmented modern Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Additionally, it seems unexpected, but Alan Cumming has been included as well, likely reprising his character from before – Nightcrawler, the mutant capable of teleportation. Perhaps he’ll have more opportunities for action sequences in this film!
It’s been revealed that Rebecca Romijn is set to return for the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of X-Men, likely reprising her iconic role as Mystique. She portrayed this character across all three of the initial X-Men films and made a short appearance in X-Men: First Class.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe now incorporating the leftovers from Fox’s X-Men universe, it’s delightful to have these seasoned actors return, adding a touch of continuity and honoring the cinematic history of these iconic characters. In contrast to Marvel’s current trend of promoting newcomers like Simu Liu and Tenoch Huerta Mejia into household names (with mixed results), having familiar, beloved performers reprise their roles can evoke a sense of nostalgia that some might find genuinely thrilling.

It’s unclear whether this implies larger parts in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe productions or merely additional appearances across the multiverse. However, for a change, Marvel has provided something worth caring about, despite the fact that it required numerous long stretches of boredom and unnecessary material to reach this point.
