The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could significantly benefit from the introduction of the X-Men, given that the Avengers are still regrouping following their adventures in “Avengers: Endgame” and the Fantastic Four have yet to establish themselves. This opening paves the way for mutants to potentially take center stage during future phases. However, Marvel Studios should be mindful of the challenges Fox encountered during their time with these characters. One method to avoid such issues is by assembling a top-tier filmmaking crew, and luckily, progress is already being made in this area. Following the success of “Thunderbolts,” director Jake Schreier is in discussions for directing Marvel Studios’ “X-Men” film, with Michael Lesslie penning the script.
The project is still relatively new and has just begun, which suggests it’ll be a few years until Charles Xavier’s students make another appearance on the big screen. Yet, with anticipation high, it’s worth discussing potential leads for Schreier’s version of the X-Men.
1) Magik
In all probability, Schreier’s team will boast many familiar characters, but he’ll also require individuals with a troubled past to rekindle the enchantment of Thunderbolts. One character who fits this description perfectly is Illyana Rasputina, more popularly known as Magik. After spending several years in Limbo, she re-emerged on Earth and became a part of diverse mutant groups. Her abilities are showcased in Fox’s New Mutants, and it would be wise for the MCU to provide her with another opportunity to shine on an even grander platform.
2) Rogue
In the Fox X-Men films, Rogue frequently appears yet fails to fully realize her capabilities. Actress Schreier has an opportunity to delve into the character’s emotional depth due to her tragic power of hurting others by touch. Moreover, with Captain Marvel dominating the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s a chance for Rogue to seize powers that will make her a formidable figure in the X-Men ’97 series.
3) Gambit
Absolutely! While Channing Tatum’s Gambit is indeed slated for Avengers: Doomsday, it’s important to note that no X-Men character aligns more with the ethos of the Thunderbolts than Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit. He’s not just the humorous sidekick portrayed in films like Deadpool & Wolverine; there’s a depth to his character that Schreier aims to highlight. Finding the perfect actor to bring Schreier and company’s vision to fruition is the key next step.
4) Warpath
In a nutshell, Warpath, who appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past, shouldn’t be ruled out for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reboot since his backstory might have been overlooked by some. Initially, he harbored resentment towards the X-Men in the comics because he believed they were responsible for his brother’s demise. However, as the truth unfolded, he became an ally of theirs. Warpath’s resilience is among the strongest in Marvel Comics, and if he were to join the MCU, it would give the franchise’s super-soldiers a run for their money.
5) Domino
A character whose second live-action appearance is desired is Domino. In “Deadpool 2”, her powers, which rely on luck, are humorously portrayed, but it’s also clear that she’s a skilled marksman and can hold her ground against top fighters in the Marvel Universe. Introducing her to the X-Men team in the MCU would provide them with a similar advantage that Black Widow offers the Avengers.
6) Pyro
Similar to Rogue, Pyro often graces the screen in Fox’s X-Men films. However, these movies don’t fully capture the depth of this character, instead portraying him as a recurring adversary for Iceman who sometimes oversteps boundaries. Schreier excels at adding complexity to villains, and Pyro will require such nuance, particularly if his storyline in the MCU mirrors that of his Fox counterpart by involving him with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
7) X-23
A true X-Men roster isn’t fully set without including some iteration of Wolverine. On multiple occasions, Laura Kinney has been a part of the team, and her inclusion will allow the Marvel Cinematic Universe to establish its own unique identity compared to past iterations. She can depart when it’s suitable for her solo venture, but having X-23 from the start guarantees that the X-Men maintain their authenticity.
8) Psylocke
In a fresh and simple rewording: Psylocke, another mutant, could use a significant update due to the Fox franchise. She was part of the Four Horsemen in X-Men: Apocalypse, but did not leave a strong impression. The Marvel Cinematic Universe can rectify this by emphasizing her intriguing psychic powers, such as crafting her signature energy swords known as psi-blades.
9) Jean Grey
As I’ve come to realize, a formidable power resides within me that often proves challenging to master. This predicament mirrors Sentry’s struggle depicted in Thunderbolts. Unfortunately, Fox was unable to bring the “Dark Phoenix” narrative to life on two separate occasions. However, with Schreier at the helm, we can expect the groundwork for this storyline to be laid early, allowing it to blossom when I’m ready to unleash my true potential.
10) Wolverine
It might not be logical for Wolverine and X-23 to both belong to the X-Men team, but introducing another Weapon X character in the movie is a shrewd decision. This allows screenwriter Schreier to work with Marvel’s most enigmatic anti-hero, paving the way for his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
