As a longtime fan of the X-Men, I must say that the latest revelation in X-Men #7 has left me both stunned and intrigued. The mystery surrounding Magneto’s wheelchair has finally been unveiled, and it turns out to be a rather poignant tale linking back to Krakoa. The Iron Night, a pivotal event referenced throughout the series, has now been brought to light, offering a fascinating insight into Cyclops and Magneto’s past actions.
One of the biggest mysteries of the X-Men: From the Ashes era is finally revealed. No longer on their sovereign nation of Krakoa, the X-Men have splintered and gone their separate ways. However, Cyclops continues to fight the good fight for mutantkind in X-Men, and Magneto is one of the members of his team. Instead of being an imposing figure, Magneto has been relegated to a floating wheelchair, similar to X-Men founder Charles Xavier. The mystery behind Magneto and the wheelchair has been a closely guarded secret throughout X-Men, but the latest issue has finally pulled back the curtain. What we didn’t know is it all links back to Krakoa. WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for X-Men #7. Continue reading at your own risk!
In issue #7 of X-Men, the storyline is brought to us by Jed MacKay, Netho Diaz, Sean Parsons, Livesay, Marte Gracia, Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, and VC’s Clayton Cowles. The “Iron Night” has been a recurring theme in the recent issues of X-Men, with hints and tidbits subtly scattered throughout. It’s revealed that this event occurred outside Merle, Alaska, where a Wild Sentinel broke free from the Sentinel factory and began attacking the town. Flashbacks in issue #7 transport readers back to the Iron Night, showing Cyclops and Magneto engaged in a conversation about rebooting the X-Men. It’s interesting to note that in this flashback, Magneto is shown walking without the aid of a wheelchair.

In a swift response, Cyclops and Magneto leap into motion to shield Merle’s inhabitants from the threat of the Wild Sentinel. The X-Men’s chieftains collaborate seamlessly; Magneto rips open the Sentinel so that Cyclops can deliver the decisive strike. The battle concludes swiftly, but there’s a more urgent matter at hand. It seems that Magneto has momentarily lost command over his mutant ability to manipulate metal.
Resurrection is slowly killing the X-Men
In the here and now, Magneto (seated in his levitating wheelchair) and Cyclops are strolling through their repurposed Sentinel factory base. Magneto accuses Cyclops of using an optic blast to knock him unconscious, and then reveals his condition as R-LDS, or Resurrection Linked Degenerative Syndrome. This ailment is linked to the resurrection methods employed by the X-Men on Krakoa. A defect in the diamond – Mister Sinister tampering with the resurrection protocols – means that anyone revived is afflicted. So far, Magneto’s body is deteriorating, and he’s losing command over his powers.
Indeed, Magneto wasn’t the sole mutant to be revived on Krakoa; Cyclops and Quentin Quire were also brought back to life on multiple occasions. This suggests that their bodies might be developing some form of betrayal over time. Notably, this aligns with the recent disclosure that Cyclops has been afflicted by a mysterious illness, which we now know is actually R-LDS.
What this means for the X-Men moving forward
Many characters from various Marvel X-Men series have been brought back to life due to the resurrection procedures. Regardless of whether they’ve shown signs or complications, they are part of those affected by the Resurrection Linked Degenerative Disease. This approach maintains the essence of the Krakoan Era of X-Men comics and moves the storyline forward. Whatever transpired before X-Men: From the Ashes remains relevant. Although it may not be the main theme of the brand, its influence will persist for a considerable period.
It’s highly likely that the Red Queen’s Loyalist Division (R-LDS) will continue to play a significant role in the X-Men storyline, especially since the franchise is gearing up for its initial crossover event following Krakoa. The upcoming four-issue event titled “Raid on Graymalkin” can be found in issues #8 and #9 of X-Men, as well as issues #7 and #8 of Uncanny X-Men. In this storyline, Cyclops and Rogue will find their teams clashing over conflicting views on how to handle Graymalkin Prison, a former mutant school now serving as a penitentiary. It remains to be seen if Cyclops’ allegiance to the R-LDS will influence his choices during this event.
