It’s highly likely that Marvel Studios is planning a fresh take on Magneto for their upcoming X-Men revamp within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, a recent rumor indicates that Magneto may not serve as the main antagonist of this new X-Men story. In May 2024, screenwriter Michael Lesslie was appointed to draft the script for the MCU’s initial X-Men reboot, which is anticipated to premiere post the conclusion of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, marking the end of the Multiverse Saga. This revamp is rumored to not only present a new X-Men squad but also reimagine some key Marvel villains, as per a recent report.
As reported by Alex Perez during the Discord Q&A session (through The Cosmic Circus), it’s speculated that the MCU’s forthcoming X-Men reboot will showcase three reimagined villains as the primary adversaries for the new mutant squad. These antagonists are expected to be Mister Sinister, Senator Robert Kelly, and Bolivar Trask. Previously hinted at or involved in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men series, these characters could potentially have a larger role and more significance in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, it’s important to note that this information has not been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios yet.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve always been captivated by the transformative journey of Senator Robert Kelly. Initially, he was a foe to the X-Men, fueled by anti-mutant sentiments that formed the backbone of his political campaign. However, a change of heart transformed him into an invaluable ally. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) were to introduce the X-Men, Senator Kelly could make for an engaging human adversary, potentially paired with military genius Bolivar Trask, the inventor of the Sentinels. Interestingly, Bruce Davison portrayed Kelly in the 2000’s X-Men film, while Peter Dinklage donned the Trask persona in X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, there’s one iconic X-Men villain yet to grace our screens in a live-action adaptation.
Nathaniel Essex, also known as Mister Sinister, is a well-known and powerful enemy of the X-Men in Marvel Comics lore. Although he’s been hinted at repeatedly in the Fox X-Men film series, he has yet to make a personal appearance. It would be exciting if Marvel Studios decided to bring him into play, perhaps by casting Jon Hamm for the part of this formidable antagonist. Given his long lifespan, fascination with genetic engineering, and links to other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, Mister Sinister seems tailor-made for the upcoming X-Men revamp in the MCU.
In 2026’s “Avengers: Doomsday,” Ian McKellen is slated to reprise his role as Magneto, a villain-turned-ally in the X-Men series. However, it’s likely that Marvel Studios will introduce a younger, more energetic, and more fearsome version of Magneto for future MCU appearances. Since Magneto has been a key character in the Fox “X-Men” franchise, there may be an effort to limit his presence. This opens up the chance for new antagonists like Senator Kelly, Bolivar Trask, and particularly Mister Sinister to make their impact on the MCU instead.
Avengers: Doomsday now has a release date of December 18, 2026.
