X-Men Shocker: Is Emma Frost’s Dark Side Returning?

Emma Frost, a beloved character, debuted in the renowned tale “The Dark Phoenix Saga”. As the White Queen of the Hellfire Club, she posed a danger to the X-Men; however, there was always a desire within her to act as a teacher and ensure her pupils didn’t endure the life she did. Emma was empathetic yet practical, instilling similar qualities in her Hellions students. After the demise of the Hellions and her own resurrection, she took up teaching at Xavier’s Massachusetts Academy, shaping Generation X before relocating to Genosha after Magneto claimed it. The slaughter of Genosha by Mega-Sentinels led her to join the X-Men, where she has remained one of the most cherished mutants for the past 24 years.

As a devoted cinephile looking back on the X-Men saga, I’ve always admired Emma Frost for her exceptional performance as an X-Man throughout the 21st century. Yet, she’s had her stumbles – the first being entangled with the Phoenix Force and the second, a tragic turn when Cyclops succumbed to M-Pox, leading her to return to the Hellfire Club, causing friction with my former comrades. However, the rise of Krakoa marked a turning point in Emma’s narrative, and she ascended to become a leader on the island. The fall of Krakoa left a profound impact on Emma, guiding her towards mentorship again in the pages of Exceptional X-Men. Lately, though, subtle hints have surfaced that could signal a return to her old ways.

Emma Frost Has Every Reason to Turn Back to Evil

Right now, it appears that Emma Frost is doing well, as she’s mentoring three new mutants alongside Kitty Pryde and Iceman, two individuals with whom she shares a complex past. This shared history might be contributing to some recent issues she’s experiencing. However, this positive phase in her life is not without its flaws. Her students don’t seem to hold her in high regard, particularly Aro, who has been evading her guidance. Moreover, being around Kitty and Iceman isn’t always smooth sailing. Kitty’s return to the X-Men following Jean Grey’s death unearthed a difficult past between them, as Emma was once involved with Cyclops, Jean’s husband, which strained their relationship significantly. Despite a transition from enmity to mutual respect, Kitty and Emma still harbor lingering resentment towards each other. In the comic book “Exceptional X-Men,” their relationship has become even more tense than before.

Emma’s bond with Iceman is fraught with danger, as we saw in “Uncanny X-Men” issue #281 where the Hellions were wiped out by Sentinels and Emma seemingly perished in the fight. However, she managed to escape her body and inhabit Iceman’s mind instead. During this time, she revealed the full extent of his powers and eventually departed his mind, returning to her own. Despite this shared history, they have never truly been friends; more accurately, they tolerate each other rather than being fond of one another. This forced proximity with individuals from her past, combined with the way her students treat her, isn’t beneficial for Emma.

The demise of Krakoa is a heavy burden on Emma, as it represented her long-cherished aspiration. This utopia offered sanctuary and acceptance to young mutants, allowing them to grow and harness their powers within an environment filled with affection and encouragement. Emma was not only a fervent advocate for Krakoa but also its dedicated steward, tirelessly working to safeguard the island nation and enhance its influence. Regrettably, despite her relentless efforts, she could not prevent its downfall, a failure exacerbated by the missteps of other leaders. The dream that Emma nurtured was already corrupted before she even realized it.

The security of Krakoa has crumbled, leaving mutants in a perilous state than before. In place of the genocidal Orchis Initiative emerges an enigmatic entity behind Graymalkin Prison, capturing and arming mutants. She finds herself dealing with disrespectful students, and her colleagues among the X-Men are those she has hurt the most, excluding Jean Grey. Her universe has been devastated, and when Emma’s world fragments, history shows she responds aggressively.

In my own perspective, the disintegration of Emma Frost’s life once upon a time led me down a bleak path. This road took me to a point where I sought the eradication of the Inhumans, believing them responsible for the death of Cyclops, the man I cherished deeply. To some extent, my actions could be justified; the Terrigen Mists they released had caused M-Pox, and their response was inadequate when it came to lessening its damaging impact on mutants like myself. Yet, even amidst this despair, a glimmer of hope lingered within me. This sliver of optimism bore fruit with the creation of Krakoa. Alas, that haven too was consumed by flames and bloodshed, leaving me in ruins unlike any I’ve ever experienced before – worse than “Murder at the Mansion.

Currently, all that once was is now absent. Emma finds herself in a location reminiscent of her teenage years, when she abandoned her family’s riches to demonstrate her superiority. She possesses no prospects and her existence mirrors a fraction of what it used to be. The White Queen, the place she sought solace during her last despair, may well draw her again. It would not be surprising if she returns there. Indeed, it appears that’s the direction her life is heading. Emma Frost struggles to accept loss, and it seems inevitable that she will eventually make the world suffer for what it has taken from her.
