As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant worlds of Marvel and X-Men, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia at the prospect of these iconic superhero franchises finally merging on the big screen. The thought of seeing the Avengers and X-Men together is like a dream come true for many fans, myself included.
In a recent statement, one of the lead actors from the X-Men film series has expressed doubt about reprising their iconic character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Ever since Disney took over 20th Century Fox, fans have dreamed about witnessing the long-awaited team-up of the Avengers and the X-Men on screen. The terms “mutant” have cropped up in shows like Ms. Marvel, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced the MCU‘s first X-Man (Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier) within a different group called the Illuminati. Let’s not forget about the successful movie Deadpool & Wolverine, which included Charles Xavier’s evil twin sister, Cassandra Nova, but no appearances from the original X-Men actors as cameos. As per James McAvoy, who portrayed young Charles Xavier, it seems more probable that Marvel Studios will opt to recast the role instead.
James McAvoy indicated to BuzzFeed UK that he thinks the characters he played in “The Chronicles of Narnia” (Mr. Tumnus) and the X-Men series (Charles Xavier / Professor X) might be taken over by different actors in the future. He said, “It seems quite likely that other performers will portray those roles instead.
When will the X-Men make their MCU debut?
Currently, there isn’t an X-Men movie scheduled in Marvel Studios’ upcoming movie lineup. However, another asset from the 20th Century, the Fantastic Four, will officially enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” on July 25, 2025. Fans were given more insights into the Fantastic Four reboot at San Diego Comic-Con, where they unveiled the film’s new title and showcased the first footage, which depicted Reed Richards (played by Pedro Pascal) teaching in a classroom. Legendary composer Michael Giacchino is also working on the score for this movie.
It seems likely that Marvel Studios is holding off on introducing the X-Men until after Avengers: Endgame. Given that Deadpool and Wolverine are expected to feature in the final chapter of the Multiverse Saga, and with actors like Kelsey Grammer potentially playing a role in future films leading up to Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s only natural to anticipate some exciting crossovers. Actors such as Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Halle Berry (Storm), and others could join the likes of Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), and Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) on screen, creating a nostalgic blend of old and new characters.
Perhaps one day, we’ll witness James McAvoy reuniting with Patrick Stewart on screen, both portraying their respective Charles Xaviers, joining forces to confront Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
