X-Manhunt” marks the second significant cross-over event in the “From the Ashes” X-Men series. The storyline unfolds as follows: Empress Xandra, daughter of Professor X and Lilandra, is under attack by Shi’Ar rebels who have long sought her downfall since she ascended to the throne. She reaches out to her father for aid, leading to his escape from Graymalkin Prison on a clandestine mission, during which he clashes with Rogue’s X-Men team. Professor X then pleads with Storm for assistance in reaching Utopia, the former X-Men base, where he engages in combat with Cyclops’s X-Men and X-Factor, all in pursuit of a singular prize – the last Krakoa resurrection egg. It is later disclosed that Xavier was actually abducted by an unidentified assailant, a ruse orchestrated by him as he had secretly sought assistance from Sage for extraction. In X-Force #9, penned by Geoffrey Thorne and Marcus To, we learn the true reason behind Xavier’s desperate quest to obtain that egg.
Xavier unveils that the egg contains the individual who underwent the last Krakoan resurrection – surprisingly, not a mutant. Instead, Xavier placed someone significant to him inside the egg, using his telepathic abilities to restore memories to ‘Lilandra Neramani’, a former Empress of the Shi’Ar and Xavier’s long-term partner. The bond between the Shi’Ar and the X-Men has been one of the most significant in the team’s past, and this explains why an egg with Lilandra was created by Xavier.
Xavier’s Relationship With the Shi’Ar Made the Modern X-Men Possible
The X-Men’s ties with the Shi’Ar started during the conflict over the M’Kraan Crystal. At that time, Emperor D’Ken, elder brother of Lilandra, was ruling the Shi’Ar Empire and was infamously known as the “Mad Emperor.” In contrast, Lilandra served as the Grand Admiral of the Shi’Ar fleet. While exploring, she stumbled upon the M’Kraan Crystal, a source of immense power that D’Ken desired. Fearing her brother’s ambition, Lilandra sought to prevent him from obtaining it. The Crystal was known as the Nexus of All Realities. In an attempt to stop him, she reached out to Earth and requested assistance from Charles Xavier, whom she recognized due to his previous victory against the alien Z’Nox.
For the very first time, the X-Men lent aid to the Shi’Ar, marking the beginning of a budding affection between Lilandra and Professor Xavier. In their joint victory over D’Ken, Lilandra ascended to the throne, strengthening the bond between the Shi’Ar and the X-Men. As a token of gratitude, Lilandra bestowed upon the X-Men cutting-edge computer and holographic technology, transforming their training facility, the Danger Room, into a precursor for a holodeck.
This version aims to maintain the original meaning while providing a more natural and easy-to-read flow of information.
The Shi’Ar/X-Men partnership provided the X-Men with technology unmatched outside Mr. Fantastic’s workshop. This advanced technology significantly upgraded their Danger Room and enhanced Cerebro’s power and efficiency. In addition, Professor X was covertly transporting unique Shi’Ar memory crystals to Earth, aiming to complete a secret computer system that could store the memories of all Earth’s mutants. Once fully operational, this would pave the way for Krakoan resurrection.
To put it simply, a significant portion of the technology found on Krakoa that isn’t mutant-originated is derived from Shi’Ar technology. This is due to the alliance between Krakoa and Empress Xandra, who succeeded Gladiator after he ruled for a long time on her behalf. Without the technological prowess of the Shi’Ar, not only would the X-Men have been unable to create Krakoa, but they also wouldn’t have had the edge that allowed them to overcome numerous adversaries.
Lilandra’s Return Could Reboot the Relationship Between the X-Men & Shi’Ar
The comic series ‘From the Ashes’ focuses on reassembling fragments following the Krakoa Era. Long-standing X-Men ideas are making a comeback in the X-Men books after many years, and the revival of Lilandra Neramani is a testament to this trend. The X-Men are set to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with ‘X-Men ’97’ marking their initial entry. Even casual fans recognize the bond between the Shi’Ar and the X-Men. Professor X’s relationship with Lilandra holds significant importance in his life, and her return offers an opportunity for the X-office to rekindle another classic X-Men aspect for potential collaboration with the MCU.
Currently, the X-Men aren’t in a great state as internal conflicts between Rogue and Cyclops’s group have arisen. Moreover, the advanced tech from the Krakoa Era seems to be absent. However, Lilandra’s return to rule over the Shi’Ar might bring a significant ally for the X-Men. This could potentially take them back to Xavier, and with Lilandra’s technology, they can regain much of what was lost, possibly restoring their former strength and influence.
You can grab issue #9 of X-Force right now from any retailer that sells comics. Additionally, the broader “Manhunt” storyline is also available across various X-Men titles.
