After a long wait since 2018, “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes” will make its debut on the big screen this April! Excited fans of the popular superhero shonen series have been eagerly anticipating the animated adaptation of the story featuring characters like Crawler, Pop Step, and Knuckle Duster. Instead of waiting for the eighth and final season of the main series, Studio BONES is delving into the spin-off tale early. This intriguing prequel focuses on heroes who operate outside the law, and even features some notable characters from Marvel’s X-Men as significant players in the side story!
In the initial volumes of “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes”, we meet high school troublemakers Ichimoku Samatsu and Jube Namimaru. Although they don’t share the same physical appearance as Scott Summers and James Howlett, these soon-to-be-villains possess Quirks that resemble Cyclops and Wolverine respectively. With the anime adaptation approaching, it’s an excellent opportunity to reconsider this intriguing Marvel parallel and contemplate whether these characters might appear in the animated series. While Ichimoku can fire energy beams from his eyes, Jube lacks Logan’s indestructible adamantium claws, instead wielding two wooden swords as weapons.
Uncanny Vigilantes
In the first installment of “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes” comic book series, artist Betten Court revealed how he modeled the mutants’ appearances based on these anime characters. Furuhashi asked him to make them look like troublemakers. Samatsu’s visor was inspired by a specific Marvel superhero. As Namimaru is further developed in my sketches, he becomes more and more round-shaped.
Author Hideyuki Furuhashi elaborated further on the duo, making it clear that Ichimoku and Jube were intended as tributes to Cyclops and Wolverine from the X-Men comics. At first, he only planned to use them in chapter three for a brief parody, thinking ‘I’ll just about get away with this level of humor this time around…’. However, they continued appearing in chapters four and five, prompting his editor to remark, “These guys again, huh?” It seems they will likely become recurring characters in the bonus pages of future volumes. Furuhashi enjoys using them because they offer such flexibility in terms of how he can utilize them.
Past Class 1-A Marvel Interactions
In the fictional story of Deadpool: Samurai, the grand encounter between the anime universe and the Marvel universe occurred. This tale features Deadpool, or the Merc With a Mouth, joining forces with All Might to face off against Thanos, the Mad Titan. At this moment in time, there’s no confirmation on an anime adaptation for this Wade Wilson manga, as it is currently on hiatus. Fingers crossed that comic enthusiasts will eventually witness the epic clash of these two universes, as a battle between Class 1-A and Marvel’s best would surely be an exciting spectacle to watch!
