As a long-time user of X (formerly Twitter), I was taken aback when I stumbled upon the “Grok” button at the bottom of the platform and discovered its true purpose. For years, I had mindlessly clicked on it out of habit, expecting it to take me to the search bar. But little did I know that this seemingly insignificant button held a much greater function: it was being used by X to train its AI chatbot, Grok, using my data without my prior consent.
I recall using X, formerly known as Twitter, for years, blindly clicking on the Grok button at the bottom of the platform out of habit, seeking the search function. Little did I know that this seemingly insignificant feature held a more profound purpose. It wasn’t until Grok itself revealed its secret that I discovered X had been using my data to train its AI chatbot without prior notice or announcement to its users.
If you wish to prevent your continuous thoughts posted from training the Grok AI chatbot, follow these steps: Go to “Settings and Privacy,” then click on “Privacy and Safety.” Look for the “Data Sharing and Personalization” tab and uncheck the “Grok” option there to opt out.
Discovered in the user settings of X account, Safety has announced: “X users can now decide if their public posts are able to teach Grok, our AI search assistant. This feature supplements your current controls regarding Grok’s usage of your interactions, inputs, and results. Accessible on the web platform, this privacy setting will soon be introduced on mobile devices as well. Located under the same Privacy tab that every X user can access, it’s just a few clicks away.”
Many users are expressing disappointment and frustration that the new default privacy setting on X was implemented without prior notification. As evident in the Safety on X post’s comments, this change is not well-received by the community. Several users have voiced their concerns, with @GarrettMS succinctly stating, “It’s inappropriate to release an opt-out feature that isn’t accessible on mobile devices.” This perspective is shared by the majority of the replies.
The mishap with Grok is just the most recent example of modifications to Twitter following Elon Musk’s acquisition, many of which have been met with skepticism and have left users questioning, “Was this really necessary?”
