Over the next two days, gamers using Xbox One, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X can secure a top-tier video game for free through the Microsoft Store. Once obtained, this free Xbox game will remain yours to keep. However, be sure to claim it before April 16, as after this date, the offer on the Microsoft Store will expire, and the game in question will revert back to its usual $20 price. The reason for this free offering to Xbox One users is that the game was originally released in 2014 but can be played on Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X thanks to backward compatibility.
The game on offer here is Metro 2033 Redux, a 2014 remake of the 2010 Xbox 360 launch title, Metro 2033. This game was developed by 4A Games, a studio recognized for the extensive Metro series, and published by THQ. Notably, it’s the first installment in the Metro series. Following its release, two expansions have been added: Metro: Last Light in 2013 and Metro: Exodus in 2019. However, the latest game in the series, Metro: Awakening, was released in 2024 as a VR-exclusive title.
In 2010, the game was initially released only on PC and Xbox 360, making it exclusive to the Xbox 360 console. The PC version received an 81 score on Metacritic, while the Xbox 360 version got a 77. This game, surprisingly successful for THQ, spawned a series due to its popularity. Notably, this series has gained more attention than ever before with the release of Metro Exodus in 2019, which brought it into the mainstream spotlight. A sequel is currently being developed, but no official announcement has been made yet.
2013 witnessed an apocalyptic event that nearly wiped out humanity and left the Earth’s surface as a toxic wasteland. A few survivors found shelter in the subterranean depths of Moscow, ushering in a new era of darkness for mankind. It is now 2033, and an entire generation has been born and raised underground, fighting for survival among the besieged Metro Station-Cities. You are Artyom, born before the catastrophe but raised underground. A significant event triggers a perilous journey to the heart of the Metro system, where you must warn the remaining humans of an impending disaster. Your adventure takes you from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, and your actions will decide the fate of mankind. However, what if the true danger lies within?
On social media platform X, the Metro account has pointed out that currently, there’s an issue where the game appears to be at full price when searched using navigation. However, if you navigate directly to the game’s page, the button changes to “Install.
