Xbox and LG team up, LG TVs will also be Xbox later this year

Everything may be an Xbox, but soon, even more things will be Xbox.

This collaboration between Xbox and LG, effective from the New Year, will enable support for Xbox Cloud Gaming on LG Smart TVs later in the year. As announced on Xbox Wire, this means that gamers will soon be able to explore and play Xbox games using the cloud through the upcoming Gaming Portal app on their LG TVs.

Today, we’re thrilled to share that we’re teaming up with LG Electronics for a project. By year-end, the Xbox app will be available on LG Smart TVs. This partnership means Game Pass Ultimate members can stream their games directly from the Xbox app on compatible LG Smart TVs using Xbox Cloud Gaming. Essentially, this offers more flexibility for players to engage with their preferred games. As stated by Lori Wright, corporate vice president of gaming partnerships and business development at Xbox.

This partnership broadens the variety of gadgets that players can use for Xbox Cloud Gaming, aligning with Microsoft’s current “Xbox” marketing campaign push. Previously, the feature was accessible on Samsung Smart TVs, and last year in 2024, support was added to certain Amazon Fire Stick devices as well.

It hasn’t been specified when exactly LG Smart TVs will receive Xbox Cloud Gaming, but according to the announcement, we can expect it to arrive sooner rather than later.

Stream games from a subscription, or some of the titles you already own

As an avid gamer, I can’t help but get excited about the perks that come with my Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription! With it, I have access to Xbox Cloud Gaming, which lets me dive into day-one releases of first-party Xbox titles like Starfield from Bethesda Game Studios and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 by Treyarch and Raven. The future looks even more promising, as we’re expecting a host of new first-party games throughout 2025, such as Avowed from Obsidian Entertainment and DOOM: The Dark Ages by id Software. Plus, third-party games are continually added to the library, with Frostpunk 2 being one I’m particularly looking forward to playing on console!

Towards the end of 2024, Microsoft initiated the gradual introduction of a feature allowing players to broadcast games they already possess. The initial rollout encompassed 50 titles such as the magical RPG Hogwarts Legacy and the frenetic cooperative shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. As time passes, additional games are anticipated to be compatible with this feature.

Right now, playing games that you own requires an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. This feature can be accessed on Xbox.com/play, Meta Quest 3 headsets, Samsung Smart TVs, and will soon be available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles in the year 2025, as well as on LG TV Smart TVs.

As an observer, I’ve noticed that Microsoft had intended to enable users in the U.S to purchase and play games via a unified Xbox app directly. However, for now, a temporary court ruling is preventing this rollout from happening. Besides cloud gaming, Microsoft is also developing a unique mobile store, collaborating with its first-party developers such as King (creators of Candy Crush). Unfortunately, the launch of this store has been postponed beyond its initial July 2024 window.
