In a recent interview on the podcast XboxEra for their 250th episode, Xbox Head Phil Spencer discussed Xbox as a gaming platform and their new approach to making first-party titles available across different console platforms. This strategy, highlighted by the company’s “This Is An Xbox” marketing campaign, shows Spencer’s optimism about Xbox’s future. He believes this shift allows users more freedom to play games in their preferred way. Additionally, Spencer expressed confidence in Xbox’s upcoming game lineup, which he suggests will excite the gaming community.
In wrapping up the podcast (as per VGC), host Jon Clarke posed a question that likely piqued the curiosity of many listeners: Of the unlaunched Xbox first-party games, which one should enthusiasts be most eagerly anticipating? Previously, Spencer shared his thoughts on this during his visit to the XboxEra podcast. At that time, he indicated Undead Labs’ open-world survival horror game State of Decay 3. However, since then, it appears Spencer’s enthusiasm remains for State of Decay 3, but he also mentioned a few other projects, one of which has been silent on updates for quite some time.
Spencer continues, “Let me reiterate my earlier point. One of the video game series I’m fond of is State of Decay, dating back to its original release. Consequently, it remains on my list. I also appreciate the work Double Fine is doing, particularly the collaborative approach taken by Tim [Schafer]. As for another title, I should mention this because I’ve recently visited Rare. It’s intriguing to observe the team working on Everwild and their ongoing progress.
Spencer went on, “It’s been some time now, and we’ve managed to provide these teams the space they need in their work, which is beneficial. Maintaining our current portfolio in this way feels like a long-cherished dream for Matt [Booty] and me. It’s great to finally see it come to fruition.
Despite some fans hoping for more specific updates on these three Xbox exclusive games, Phil Spencer’s mention of these projects could indicate that each one is progressing positively, particularly for Everwild by Rare, as its earlier reports suggested it was in disarray back in 2021.
For some time now, State of Decay 3 has been under active development. Yet, only last year did we get our first major trailer unveiled during the Xbox Showcase, hinting at the survival horror game. As of yet, a specific release date or timeframe hasn’t been shared, but it will make use of Unreal Engine 5.
Among the three projects, Double Fine’s next game stands out as the most enigmatic due to its lack of recent updates. After releasing Psychonauts 2 in 2021, the developer has been relatively quiet for four years since then. However, Harper Jay, Double Fine’s community manager, hinted that the studio harbors a wish to revisit Brutal Legend, one of their top-selling and dearly loved video games.
