Microsoft aims to surpass the PS6’s hardware prowess, gradually making its software available across various systems. However, in an interview with Videogamer, Xbox creator Seamus Blackley contends that the secret to console sales lies not just in technical upgrades, but primarily in unique content offerings. As technology advancements approach their limits, original content becomes increasingly crucial.
He recalled the time when Gran Turismo first appeared for the PS1, and he felt compelled to purchase it due to the incredible visuals he saw on the screen. He explained that this level of immersion is not found today; there are no longer graphics capable of evoking such a strong emotional response.
Blackley emphasized that the main strategy for selling consoles today lies in offering exclusive, one-of-a-kind experiences that cannot be found elsewhere.
He suggested that if you aim to succeed, you should focus on offering an unforgettable experience. When people encounter it, they’ll feel an irresistible urge to possess it. Essentially, you’re trying to draw them into purchasing a several hundred dollar gaming console just to play a $70 game.
Blackley left Xbox all the way back in 2002, and distanced himself from the current state of Xbox.
He exclaimed, “It’s not my responsibility to manage the brand and its future direction.” He added, “I wouldn’t have handled things in the same manner. Whether the outcome would have been better or worse, I’m unsure, but I believe that emphasizing power as a narrative isn’t beneficial today.
It’s intriguing to observe what strategies Sony and Microsoft will employ for their upcoming generations. As previously stated, Microsoft appears ready to invest in more hardware, while Sony, through unspoken confirmation, is reportedly collaborating with AMD on its next-gen console.
It seems we both share the view that the pursuit of greater power has reached a point of diminishing returns. We acknowledge Sony’s dedication towards enhancing the overall sensory aspect of gaming through the DualSense controller. However, for a significant shift in players adopting next-generation hardware, it appears that both companies will need to be exceptionally creative with their upcoming devices.
