What you need to know

  • New transparent shells called the Cipher Series are being added to Xbox Design Lab.
  • The Cipher Series are available for use with Xbox Elite Wireless Series 2 controllers, letting players customize their higher-end controllers with a retro-look.
  • There’s also new chromatic back paddle and D-pad options.
  • The Ghost Cipher Special Edition transparent controller is now available for preorder, and is slated to launch on Oct. 10, 2024.

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest additions to Xbox Design Lab have certainly piqued my interest. The Cipher Series, with its transparent shells and retro aesthetic, harks back to the golden age of gaming, evoking fond memories of pixelated adventures and late-night sessions on iconic consoles.

The next Xbox controller options are taking inspiration from a bygone era.

The Xbox Design Lab, a feature that enables gamers to personalize their controllers using numerous choices, will soon introduce see-through shells known as the Cipher Series, according to an announcement made via Xbox Wire on Tuesday.

The Cipher Series accessories are compatible with the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. With a variety of color choices, Xbox gamers can give their Elite controllers a 90s vibe. Additionally, the D-pads and back paddles can be tailored even more due to the addition of Sunset Chroma and Energy Chroma customization options. Check out some of the options and styles in the video below:

These options are available now for players to use when building a controller in Xbox  Design Lab.

Additionally, for those players interested in acquiring an extra standard, clear controller similar to the Sky Cipher (released earlier this year), there’s some fresh news for you too.

Microsoft has unveiled the Ghost Cipher Special Edition, a version reminiscent of the Sky Cipher but featuring an opaque design instead of the translucent blue hue. The Ghost Cipher Special Edition is now up for pre-order at $70, with shipping scheduled for October 10, 2024. It can be purchased directly from Xbox at present, though it’s anticipated to reach other retailers over time. If you don’t find it available yet, please check back soon.

Personally, I think these options are great, but I am hoping that in the future we’ll see the transparent designs added to Xbox Design Lab for standard controllers, not just the Elite lineup.
