Reports indicate that Microsoft might be planning another round of job cuts, primarily impacting the Xbox Game Studios. As per Tom Warren from The Verge, there’s been anxiety among current employees regarding potential layoffs, with further reductions anticipated to occur within various Xbox-related departments by the end of this month.
In the latest wave of job cuts, over 300 staff members at Microsoft were let go, including some from their legal departments. As Warren explains, this ongoing approach to redundancies has left many employees feeling uncertain and anxious about their positions within the company.
I’ve consulted with close to a dozen workers who are presently employed, and each one of them expresses worry about the continuous job reductions. The seemingly arbitrary manner of these dismissals and Microsoft’s decision not to carry them out all at once have had a significant impact on employee morale within the company.
In May, Microsoft disclosed plans for reducing its global workforce by approximately 3%. This decision affected over 6,000 employees across various departments, teams, and locations. A Microsoft representative explained that these job cuts aimed to facilitate organizational adjustments the company considered essential.
The representative stated, “We’re making crucial adjustments within our organization to ensure we thrive amidst the ever-changing business environment.
This year, there have been several job cuts in the gaming industry. In May, Codemasters also announced they would be affected by layoffs. After discontinuing the development of EA Sports WRC and temporarily halting work on future rally racing games, the company stated that it would be “reducing staff positions.
In response to the expanding demands from our customers, our company is consistently adapting. This transformation involves sharpening our focus on various projects within our portfolio. Consequently, we are considering trimming certain positions, aiming to reassign as many as feasible in line with our strategic objectives.
Recently, Electronic Arts (EA) has been going through a period of job reductions. The latest round of layoffs took place in March and impacted approximately 300 employees across various teams, including the team working on Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi franchise’s developer, Respawn Entertainment. Additionally, several projects under incubation at the studio were terminated prematurely during their early stages of development.
The company has also stopped production on a game based on Black Panther, which resulted in the closing of Cliffhanger Games. In an email, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele explained that this move was difficult but necessary to concentrate their efforts and channel their creative resources towards the projects with the greatest potential for growth.
In an email I penned down, I expressed that the choices we’re making aren’t easy. They impact individuals who we’ve collaborated with, learned from, and even shared precious moments with. We’re exerting every effort to aid them during this transition – one of those efforts being the exploration of possibilities within our organization, where we’ve successfully helped people find new roles before.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to share some insider news from the gaming world. According to Patrick Wren, senior encounter designer on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, team spirit at Respawn Entertainment is currently at its lowest ebb, an all-time low if you will.
