Xbox Fans Have 24 Hours With Their Avatars Before They Are Gone Forever

Users of Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X have until now to utilize their personalized characters, known as Avatars, as they will disappear permanently within 24 hours. Introduced way back in November 19, 2008 via the Xbox 360’s “New Xbox Experience,” which was a significant update during the Xbox 360 era, these Avatars were highly popular and integral to the user experience on Xbox consoles.

During the Xbox One generation, Avatars took a backseat, which may be why Microsoft revamped them significantly on November 12, 2015 with the “New Xbox One Experience” update. They updated Avatars again in 2018, but these improvements didn’t reinvigorate their popularity. In just 10 years, Avatars transitioned from a crucial aspect of the Xbox experience to being largely overlooked. Consequently, Microsoft has decided to phase out Avatars, at least to some extent.

24 hours from now, starting on January 9, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will no longer be supported on Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and Windows devices. This means that users won’t be able to use this app, which houses the Avatars and any Avatar items purchased. However, it’s important to note that not all Xbox Avatars will disappear; only the functionality provided by the Avatar Editor app is being phased out.

Microsoft has shared that the upcoming system shutdown won’t impact the usage of Xbox Original Avatars in compatible Xbox 360 games. You can still modify these original avatars using the Xbox Original Avatars app, which is accessible on both Xbox consoles and Windows devices. Originally introduced in 2008, the Xbox Original Avatars are now available on modern systems through the Xbox Original Avatars app. Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn’t provided any information about how long this app will continue to operate. At present, there are no announced plans to take it down. Until then, all profile picture changes related to avatars on Xbox will need to be made via this app.

Customers who are about to lose access to cosmetics they’ve previously bought can expect a refund, but only for those purchases made between November 1, 2023 and January 9, 2025. Unfortunately, items purchased prior to this date will not be eligible for any kind of refund.

Microsoft hasn’t provided extensive details about why they made this change, which has left some Xbox enthusiasts disappointed. However, they have stated that the reason for the closure is merely due to “insufficient user interaction” or “lack of active participation.

Microsoft is committed to providing exceptional gaming experiences for players, offering numerous ways to customize their gaming journey with Xbox. However, due to minimal user interaction and our strategic move towards enhancing other player experiences, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will no longer be accessible starting from January 9, 2025.
