Xbox Fans Rejoice: Classic JRPG Franchise Makes Epic Debut on Xbox!

On their site, RPGSite, the go-to place for RPG fans, just shared a preliminary review of the upcoming Xbox JRPG, titled Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land, or simply Atelier Yumia. This sneak peek also featured an exclusive interview with Junzo Hosoi, the producer for the Atelier series and president of Gust Corporation, the creative minds behind the Atelier franchise.

In an interview with RPGSite, Junzo Hosoi shared intriguing details about his strategies to boost the popularity of the Atelier franchise in Western regions and hinted at his affection for the Xbox platform possibly influencing why Atelier Yumia was the first game in the series to be released on this platform.

In the initial part of the RPGSite interview, Junzo Hosoi expressed that Gust Corporation aims to make Atelier Yumia one of the top-grossing installments within the series, building on the remarkable success of the Atelier Ryza trilogy. He made this statement while keeping in mind that it was Atelier Ryza which rescued the franchise from potential cancellation following a series of challenging releases.

If Atelier Ryza hadn’t been successful, it could have marked the conclusion of the series.

One aspect of Junzo Hosoi’s plan for the success of Atelier Yumia involves joining hands-on international previews himself, and broadening its reach by releasing the game on additional platforms like Xbox. Previously, the series had been exclusively available only on PlayStation and PC platforms.

As a tech enthusiast, I found myself pleasantly surprised during the interview when I stumbled upon a fascinating tidbit. It seems that Atelier Yumia’s presence on Xbox might not solely be due to business reasons, as it turned out that Junzo Hosoi, the mastermind behind this game studio, is an ardent fan of the Xbox platform.

I have a strong affection for Xbox; I’ve been a dedicated user since its inception, and I’ve long harbored a desire to create something for this platform.

Junzo Hosoi supports his statement by expressing his deep affection for the Halo series. He mentions that he was inspired by the bond between Master Chief and Cortana to develop Flammi, a sentient device that assists in surveys and will travel with Atelier Yumia’s main character, Yumia, during her journey.

Junzo Hosoi expressed that he wished the Atelier Ryza trilogy could be available on Xbox, but this didn’t happen until after the series gained popularity in Japan. Moreover, it was simpler to argue for Xbox ports for a brand new trilogy of games instead of porting an existing one.

Incidentally, Junzo Hosoi expressed his disappointment that Halo seems to have lost its appeal among the broader audience, as they appear to be drawn towards games such as Valorant, Counter-Strike, and Apex Legends instead.

Additionally, Junzo Hosoi shares his enthusiasm for first-person shooter (FPS) video games and eagerly awaits the release of Borderlands 4. While he enjoyed the initial two installments in the Borderlands series, he expressed a sense of letdown after playing Borderlands 3.

After conducting an interview, RPGSite moves on to its review segment, discussing how Atelier Yumia aspires to become one of the most significant installments in the series. This game is designed to delight long-term enthusiasts, while also serving as a welcoming introduction for newcomers to the series.

Color me intrigued in Atelier’s Xbox debut adventure

If you’re unfamiliar with it, Atelier Yumia is a fresh addition to the popular Atelier series, set to release soon. These games are typically humorous role-playing games where you assume the role of an alchemist in an atelier, journeying across various lands to create items, unearth hidden mysteries, and forge friendships with new acquaintances.

For someone who hasn’t played an Atelier game previously, the upcoming Xbox and PC titles certainly pique my interest based on RPGSite’s review.

The game offers an expansive, enchanting, open-ended environment for you to discover, its diverse and intriguing characters add excitement, and it boasts a sophisticated real-time battle mechanism that heavily relies on your strategic positioning to trigger powerful attacks capable of breaching an enemy’s defenses.

Of course, the renowned crafting mechanism that defines the Atelier series is making a return, but this time it’s more expansive than before. In Atelier Yumia, players can construct numerous items, equipment, artifacts, and even buildings using the vast array of crafting resources they’ll discover during their adventure.

Additionally, it’s been verified that the PC version of Atelier Yumia is performing exceptionally well. They were able to run it smoothly at resolutions ranging from 1440p/60fps up to 4K/120fps on a PC, and it maintained a steady 30fps on the Steam Deck.

On several occasions, I’ve heard my friends praise the Atelier games, particularly the Atelier Ryza trilogy. When Atelier Yumia is released, I plan to give it a try to see if it lives up to its potential and could join the ranks of excellent Xbox JRPGs, such as the Persona series, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and the Like a Dragon series.

The initial Atelier game for the Xbox platform, titled “Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land,” is set to launch on March 28, 2025. This title will be available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, both Xbox One and the newer Xbox Series X|S, as well as PC through Steam.
