Xbox Game Pass Ends September Losing One of Its Best Games

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen the ebb and flow of games come and go from subscription services like Xbox Game Pass. The recent exodus of nine titles has left me both reminiscent and anticipatory.

Towards the very end of September, a total of nine games were removed from Xbox Game Pass across PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. Among these nine Xbox Game Pass titles, some stand out as particularly noteworthy, with one arguably being one of the best games offered through the subscription service. Additionally, a well-liked survival game and a widely popular AAA game have also been taken off the platform.

If you’re unfamiliar with the recent updates, these nine titles have been removed from Xbox Game Pass: Gotham Knights, Building a Zoo, Loop Hero, My Time At Portia, PAW Patrol Grand Prix, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, The Walking Dead complete collection (both seasons), and Valheim. While some might consider these as filler games, there are indeed some noteworthy titles in the list.

Gotham Knights represents a significant change from the norm, even though it was a successful AAA game. However, its reception wasn’t overwhelmingly positive. At one time, Valheim was incredibly popular, but by 2024, its popularity had waned. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy evokes nostalgia, but The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season stands out as the top choice among these games. As Wikipedia points out, this game is often hailed as a pioneer and one of the best ever made in the genre. Although the second season doesn’t enjoy the same reputation, the first season can be experienced independently and is definitely worth checking out.

With the removal of those specific games from Xbox Game Pass, the 20% discount for subscribers has also disappeared. As to whether and when these games might reappear on Xbox Game Pass, that’s uncertain. While it’s not impossible for them to return, it’s not common practice. When they do make a comeback, it’s usually limited to the most popular or critically acclaimed titles.

About the Game:

The “Walking Dead” is a five-part game sequence that takes place within the same universe as Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed comic book series. You assume the role of Lee Everett, a former convict who has been granted a new lease on life in a world overrun by zombies. As the dead rise and survivors resort to extreme measures to secure their own safety, protecting an orphaned girl named Clementine could provide him with redemption amidst chaos and ruin.
