As a long-time subscriber to Xbox Game Pass, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions about the recent changes. On one hand, I appreciate the evolution and expansion of the service since its launch in 2017. However, on the other hand, it seems like every time I log in, there’s another price hike or reduction in value.
Recently, Xbox Game Pass has undergone several modifications that users on Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC may notice in their budgets. Since its debut in 2017, Xbox Game Pass has significantly transformed as a service. It has been expanded and enhanced, however, these improvements have not come without cost. In July, Microsoft announced the introduction of a new tier for Xbox Game Pass, along with news of another price hike, presumably to cover the addition of games from Activision-Blizzard. Yesterday, these changes were implemented, as well as some adjustments designed to address loopholes that subscribers have exploited to keep their Xbox Game Pass subscription active at a reduced cost.
Starting from yesterday, Microsoft has introduced a fresh level for Xbox Game Pass called “Standard Edition.” This updated tier will supersede the prior standard version available on consoles. The main distinction lies in that the new tier won’t offer day-one releases. While these games might be added later on, there’s no guarantee or specific timeline for their inclusion.
Initially, the basic tier was priced at $10.99 per month, but now it has increased to $14.99. Simultaneously, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate escalated from $16.99 to $19.99, PC Game Pass rose from $9.99 to $11.99, and Xbox Game Pass Core, exclusively available in a 12-month plan, jumped from $59.99 to $74.99.
Unfortunately, t2 ratio, as it was for non-active subscribers earlier. Instead, it has been adjusted to a 2:1 ratio. On Reddit, Xbox users, as expected, are expressing their dissatisfaction with this change, labeling it “severe” or even “brutal.
Be aware – new conversion rate!

Over the course of a week, the cost of Xbox Game Pass rose while its worth decreased for many users, particularly standard subscribers, who experienced a notable drop in value. To add insult to injury, the exchange rate also took a toll on some customers, hitting their pockets twice.
Unfortunately, after modifications like these are implemented, they tend to remain permanent. Over the course of time, instead of decreasing, subscription fees only escalate. The fluctuation in conversion rates implies that Microsoft is keen on sealing all potential savings avenues for an Xbox Game Pass subscription. As a result, subscribers now have to pay $20 for day one games, whereas previously they paid just $10. It remains to be seen if this increased cost will compensate for the likely decline in subscription popularity in the future.
