According to recent information from Windows Central, it appears that Microsoft has decided to postpone the development of their own Xbox portable device. Instead, they are concentrating all efforts on enhancing the efficiency of Windows 11 on external handheld PCs produced by other manufacturers. This revelation is unfortunate because there have been ongoing whispers about an official Xbox handheld, and even Microsoft’s Gaming CEO, Phil Spencer, has acknowledged these rumors in the past.
The article continues by detailing how Microsoft intends to optimize the gaming experience for Windows 11 on third-party handheld PCs. This optimization will make the OS run games more flawlessly on these devices, enhancing their functionality as gaming platforms. Notably, this improvement is expected in the Asus handheld project, codenamed Project Kennan, which is rumored to serve as a companion device for Xbox. Windows Central suggests that while the hardware of Project Kennan is nearly complete and may be released later this year, the software development still demands considerable work from its creators.
It seems that, in the grand scheme of things, this situation might just be a short-term hurdle when it comes to Microsoft’s ongoing quest for developing new official Xbox devices like a handheld console. Windows Central asserts that Microsoft continues to invest heavily in the future development of its own Xbox gaming handheld technology, despite the current focus on third-party solutions. There are whispers of a next-generation Xbox console due out in 2027 and ongoing improvements to their Xbox Cloud Gaming platform. Furthermore, this reported reallocation of resources has not led to any layoffs, which is an encouraging sign that it’s more about managing resources effectively rather than a drastic shift in direction.
Bear in mind that neither Microsoft nor Asus have confirmed an Xbox-related handheld device yet, although there has been much speculation and hinting about it. If Windows Central’s reports are on target, we might see the Asus device launched later this year, possibly alongside a fall lineup of games such as Ninja Gaiden 4 and The Outer Worlds 2.
