Xbox Is Retiring the Xbox Game Pass App

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I bid farewell to the Xbox Game Pass app. While it was never the most integral part of my gaming life, its removal does mark a chapter closed in the ever-evolving world of console gaming.

This week, Xbox is implementing significant updates to its mobile applications, resulting in the closure of the Xbox Game Pass app. In a recent announcement, Microsoft has disclosed that all the features from the Game Pass app will be incorporated into the existing Xbox application instead. This consolidation means users will now need only one app on their phone, while still retaining the ability to perform all tasks as they previously did using the current app. As of now, the Game Pass app can still be downloaded, but it will be discontinued in November. Microsoft has indicated that the features from the Game Pass app will first become available for Xbox beta members within the regular Xbox app, before being rolled out to all users.

The Xbox app on mobile now consolidates crucial functions such as browsing Game Pass, managing your membership, and accessing exclusive perks for Game Pass Ultimate members. This means you can easily discover new games in the Game Pass library, receive updates about upcoming titles, and claim your Perks all in one place.

Frankly speaking, the Xbox Game Pass application has always felt unnecessary given its redundancy, so this integration is quite timely. It seems peculiar that these features weren’t incorporated into the standard Xbox app from the beginning. The main issue lies in the fact that one cannot directly play Game Pass games on the app; instead, a workaround is required to display a compatible browser on the phone screen. If you opt for Cloud Streaming on your home screen, it essentially multiplies your Xbox apps to three. Merging them down to two was long overdue, and this development should be welcome news for those struggling with limited phone storage.

This action not only removes an unnecessary duplicate app from Xbox, but also enhances the existing one with additional features. Having most of the functions in a single location should make it more user-friendly, assuming the developers manage to make it seamless and intuitive to use. Let’s hope that’s the case, but we won’t truly know until the updates are implemented.
