Xbox mobile apps are being streamlined, combining Xbox Game Pass and Xbox apps together

What you need to know

  • The Xbox and Xbox Game Pass mobile apps for Android and iOS are being streamlined.
  • Many of the Xbox Game Pass app’s functions are being added to the main Xbox app, while the Xbox Game Pass will no longer be available to download in November.
  • This update will be rolling out to Xbox beta members first, and will be coming to all users soon after.

As an observer with years of experiencing the dynamic world of gaming, I find the recent updates from Microsoft regarding the Xbox mobile apps quite intriguing. The merger of the Xbox and Xbox Game Pass mobile apps seems like a logical step towards simplifying the user experience.

The Xbox mobile experience is getting slightly less convoluted.

Microsoft announced on Wednesday that they will merge the functionalities of their Xbox and Xbox Game Pass mobile apps for Android and iOS devices. Presently, gamers utilize the Xbox mobile app primarily for tracking achievements, participating in party chat, and staying connected with friends. Meanwhile, the Xbox Game Pass app is employed to view games offered through the subscription service and access Xbox Cloud Gaming for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.

Starting later this week, Xbox beta users can access a significant portion of the Xbox Game App’s features on the primary Xbox app. This includes browsing the Xbox Game Pass library and redeeming rewards, with broader availability coming for everyone shortly after. The old Xbox Game Pass app will no longer be available for download by some point in November 2024.

In the future, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members will have access to Xbox Cloud Gaming directly via Xbox.com/play.

Microsoft has grand mobile ambitions for Xbox

This comes as Microsoft is currently working on its big mobile strategy for Xbox.

Back in early part of the year, Xbox President Sarah Bond announced that the much-anticipated Xbox Mobile Store was set to debut in July 2024. However, as I’m writing this, it hasn’t launched yet and there’s no new date for its rollout. When it does launch, though, Bond mentioned it would initially carry first-party games such as Candy Crush and Minecraft, with plans to add content from third-party partners later on.

A few weeks back, participants stumbled upon a webpage for the Xbox Mobile Store, expressing gratitude to the members of the Xbox Insiders Program for registering and testing it out.
