11 years after its initial release in 2014, a game from Ubisoft on the Xbox One platform has taken the top spot as the most-played title on Xbox Game Pass Standard. Remarkably, this game has recently been updated to run at 60 frames per second (FPS) on modern consoles like the Xbox Series S and X for the first time ever on these platforms. For me, an avid Xbox gamer, this means a smoother gaming experience than ever before when playing on my next-gen console! Although not the largest update, its popularity has surpassed heavyweights such as GTA 5, Diablo 3, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Anno 1800, and more to claim the #1 position on the Xbox Game Pass Standard charts.
If you’re still unaware, I’m referring to Far Cry 4, developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Although Far Cry 5 has been the series’ top-seller and Far Cry 3 is widely praised as its best, many fans consider Far Cry 4 as the second greatest Far Cry game so far, with only Far Cry 3 ahead of it. Given this, it’s not entirely shocking to see a resurgence of interest in playing it again after all these years, but it is somewhat surprising given that it isn’t the most popular or latest installment. To give credit where it’s due, Xbox Game Pass did promote its addition quite aggressively over the past week.
In line with its title, Far Cry 4 serves as the fourth primary game in this series and was launched on November 18, 2024 across various platforms including PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Upon debut, it received Metacritic scores ranging from 80 to 85; the differences being due to the platform used for play. Although it follows Far Cry 3 and is followed by Far Cry 5, it has a unique narrative that doesn’t heavily rely on previous storylines. While there are small connections in the lore between these games, they are nearly negligible.

As an excited fan, I’m thrilled to share that if you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you can dive into the action-packed world of Far Cry 4 without needing an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription! With just a standard subscription, you’re all set to explore this incredible game.
After downloading, Xbox Game Pass users will find a game that typically lasts between 18 to 30 hours. However, for those who aim to complete every aspect of the Ubisoft game, it might take around 50 hours. The duration for which the game will be available through Xbox Game Pass is not specified by Microsoft. Nevertheless, as long as it remains on the subscription service, users can buy it with a unique 20 percent discount.
Here’s my take:
