Xbox Plans to Release a Handheld, but it’s a Few Years Away

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the evolution of gaming consoles since the days of Pong and Pac-Man, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation at the prospect of an Xbox handheld device. The success stories of the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and others have shown that portable gaming isn’t just a trend, it’s a game-changer (pun intended!).

For quite some time, whispers about an Xbox handheld have been circulating, and given the triumphs of devices such as the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and others, it’s no wonder why. While Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer hasn’t made any formal announcements yet, his recent statements hint that a portable gaming device is indeed in the cards for Xbox’s future strategy. As a dedicated fan, I can hardly contain my excitement!

He recently told Bloomberg that he agreed with this sentiment, admitting that “it’s anticipated we will take action” in the handheld market. At present, designs are being developed, but despite some initial steps, Spencer notes that any resulting device, whenever it materializes, is likely still several years down the line.

Previously, Spencer had been hesitant to discuss possible Xbox portable devices from Microsoft, claiming there were no updates to share at the time. However, not long after, rumors surfaced suggesting that the company was actually developing concepts for a dedicated Xbox handheld device.

It’s uncertain if this gadget will become a key component in Microsoft’s future hardware strategies for gaming, but considering Phil Spencer’s statement about a portable Xbox version being some years away, the timing could certainly coincide.
