Xbox Reportedly Spends $1 Billion Per Year on Game Pass Deals

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but marvel at the sheer audacity of Microsoft’s investment in Xbox Game Pass. A whopping $1 billion annually? That’s enough to make even the most frugal among us gasp!

A recently released report uncovers an unexpected fact: Microsoft invests approximately one billion dollars annually in securing third-party games for Xbox Game Pass. Despite being a significant revenue stream for Microsoft, maintaining Xbox Game Pass requires ongoing financial commitment. The exact amount Microsoft spends on Game Pass was previously veiled in secrecy, but this is now changing.

Based on Bloomberg’s report, Microsoft is estimated to invest approximately $1 billion annually to secure third-party games for their subscription service. This figure includes both substantial upfront payments (in millions of dollars) to various game studios and publishers, as well as a percentage of the subscription revenue that these companies receive in return. The specifics of how Microsoft decides how much each publisher should earn for participating in the Game Pass service weren’t disclosed, but it’s likely that popular, high-end AAA games carry a higher price tag to be included in the service.

Although it may appear to be a large sum of money (and indeed it is), Xbox Game Pass usually recoups this amount rather swiftly. With over 30 million subscribers currently, if each pays around $15 on average, Microsoft could recover its investment in Game Pass within just two or three months.

Given the escalating costs of video game development, it’s quite possible that Microsoft will need to provide more incentives to publishers to include their games in Xbox Game Pass. Over time, the current $1 billion investment may seem relatively small compared to the sum Microsoft spends on this service today. These factors probably explain why Microsoft increased the price of Game Pass this month and introduced new tiers for its subscription platform.
