- Xbox’s General Manager for AI Gaming says game developers’ adoption of AI will be a significant leap forward, making games more enjoyable for players.
- However, the manager acknowledges the need for tools that meet developer-specific needs to explore AI’s potential in gaming.
- A separate report details the adoption of AI game development by various studios and developers’ reluctance to clean up the mess made by the technology: “It’s not why I got into making games.”
As someone who has spent decades immersed in the dynamic world of gaming, I am both excited and cautiously optimistic about the integration of AI into our beloved industry. The potential for innovation is undeniably immense, with AI opening doors to new gameplay experiences and streamlining development processes. However, as Zachary Boddy aptly pointed out at GDC 2024, we must tread carefully.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed various aspects of life, such as education, healthcare, music, technology, and gaming. Companies like Microsoft have eagerly embraced AI technology and integrated it extensively into their technological infrastructure. Now, this technology is finding its way into the realm of gaming.
At the GDC 2024 conference, my coworker Zachary Boddy pointed out that artificial intelligence in gaming was a prominent feature, yet he also emphasized significant concerns associated with it. As per Boddy’s remarks:
While I’d like to remain hopeful, it’s essential to approach matters with caution – regardless of your economic or political views. Companies should not be blindly trusted because their primary focus will always be on profits over people. Nevertheless, Artificial Intelligence offers significant potential for crafting unique gaming experiences and serving as a valuable tool for developers during the game development process.
AI in gaming is highly promising, but it’s faced with critical issues
Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a vital role in today’s video games, as it is integrated into numerous titles. As per Xbox’s Head of Gaming AI, Haiyan Zhang, this trend is set to continue and expand further.
“Artificial Intelligence has evolved from relying on rule-based systems to adopting neural networks, and with the advent of generative AI, there’s exciting scope for enhancing the way games are played.”
According to Zhang, the increasing immersion in video games is significantly impacted by generative AI. This technology can be effectively utilized to enhance gameplay, offering more engaging dialogues, tailored gaming experiences, and other improvements.
The General Manager emphasizes that independent game creators have been making substantial advancements. A case in point is a game called Smoking Gun, produced by ReLU studios from Korea, where gamers can engage with characters within the game who are driven by artificial intelligence and language models to solve murder mysteries.
Indeed, Zhang recognizes the importance of providing tools that empower game developers to harness AI’s capabilities. As he stated, “It’s crucial to lower the hurdles for integrating AI into games.” Moreover, he emphasized the necessity of determining the expense associated with inference—a concern shared by numerous developers at present.
Zhang proposes that enhancing AI applications to cater to the demands of game creators could serve as a foundation. Meanwhile, Microsoft is collaborating with Inworld to create sophisticated tools aimed at enabling game developers to utilize advanced technology such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 for driving NPC dialogues within games.
During Microsoft’s Windows and Surface event, the company showcased how Copilot AI could enhance gaming experiences by making it easier for players to play. Players can communicate with this tool directly from within the game and ask questions, and then it will search through their Minecraft inventory for the required materials.
Microsoft Research is utilizing artificial intelligence chatbots to condense extensive written material and make decisions based on data, thereby simplifying and expediting tasks.
Artificial Intelligence should evolve into assistive tools that amplify our capacities, enabling us to accomplish more tasks. Furthermore, these tools could open up possibilities for us to perform tasks that were previously unattainable.
Besides encouraging players to keep playing when they encounter puzzles, Artificial Intelligence (AI) also helps nurture skills by suggesting opportunities for learning new abilities, providing guidance, and offering tips on effective strategies.
It appears that AI technology holds great potential, but it’s also becoming increasingly concerning for creative professionals. Tools such as the Image Creator from Designer, which are powered by AI, can produce complex structural designs that are truly impressive. However, they struggle with seemingly basic tasks like creating a simple white image. This raises concerns about their impact on the job market for architects and interior designers.
It appears quite doubtful that AI is capable of handling intricate tasks such as game development and excelling at it.
In a separate report, a game developer highlighted critical concerns about the use of AI in game development across studios. The developer indicated that AI can develop games, but game studios still need developers to clean up the mess and errors made by the system. “The stuff that AI generates, you become the person whose job is fixing it. It’s not why I got into making games,” the developer concluded.
