Xbox Series X Reversing Controversial Change Made With the Xbox One

As a dedicated gamer who grew up during the golden era of Xbox 360, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic relief hearing about the return of friend requests on the Xbox Series X and S. The Xbox One era was, to put it mildly, a rollercoaster ride filled with questionable decisions that left many of us scratching our heads.

Microsoft plans to undo a contentious decision from the Xbox One era by implementing an upcoming update for both the Xbox Series X and S consoles. The Xbox 360 period stands out as the peak of Xbox’s history, with the second Xbox console being its most successful, selling approximately twice as much as the next best-selling Xbox model. To date, it is the only Xbox console to have matched its PlayStation rival (PS3) in terms of sales.

Moving forward from the third iteration of Xbox, rather than refining and enhancing the Xbox 360, they opted for a complete overhaul with the Xbox One. This decision led to numerous modifications that sparked controversy and, in many cases, wrong moves. The current generation of Xbox Series X and S has been gradually rectifying the issues from the initial years of the Xbox One. A recent instance of this correction is the reintroduction of Friend Requests.

On the Xbox 360 console, when you wanted to establish a connection with another user, you would extend a friend request. If someone extended a friendship invite that wasn’t desired, you could reject it. This straightforward interaction remained unaltered until it was. For the Xbox One, Microsoft decided to implement a “Follow” system, which aimed to emulate a more social media-like environment. However, this alternative was less satisfactory, leading Microsoft to revert back to the original method.

Currently, the process of accepting friend requests is undergoing tests, and eventually, it will be made available to all users in an upcoming update. It’s expected that this update might occur by the end of the year, although Microsoft has not definitively confirmed this timeline.

In essence, the follower system won’t replace our current setup; instead, they’ll coexist side by side. You’ll have the option to follow other users, but these connections will be distinct from your friend list. Unlike becoming a friend, following someone doesn’t require their consent. However, to establish friendship, you’ll still need permission. As we move forward, these two types of relationships will remain separate, helping you manage each without the other getting mixed up.

In simple terms, “This change will be reflected among your current friends and followers without any manual intervention required. You’ll maintain friendships with those who reciprocated your friendship, and continue to follow those you were already following.” (Microsoft)

Microsoft hasn’t explained the reason behind reintroducing friend requests following their removal, but it’s evident that they did so due to user demand. Moving ahead, it appears that this feature will likely become a permanent aspect of future Xbox console experiences.
