As a researcher diving into the world of gaming, I’m thrilled to celebrate Xbox Developer_Direct Day! Back in 2021, Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Game Studios, declared Microsoft’s ambition to launch a top-tier game every quarter. Coincidentally, this was during Microsoft’s acquisition spree, snapping up studios like Bethesda, Ninja Theory, and Compulsion Games. The Developer_Direct event soon followed suit, offering a sneak peek into the work of these newly acquired studios before the bustling summer showcase season. Although Xbox titles often take center stage at these events, it’s not uncommon for them to shine a light on partner games destined for their console as well.
Previously, Xbox hinted at the releases of Doom: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for their presentation, but they also added some unexpected twists to keep things exciting. Today, Xbox officially announced that all titles displayed in the Developer Direct are compatible with Xbox Play Anywhere and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, with support for Cloud Gaming. Here’s a roundup of everything shown during the January 2025 Xbox Developer_Direct event.
Ninja Gaiden 4
To start the presentation, Team Ninja and Platinum Games unveil their announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4, the latest installment in this renowned series. The narrative for Ninja Gaiden 4 unfolds in a grim, futuristic version of Tokyo, adorned with neon illumination. This city is teeming with lethal adversaries, providing ample opportunity for exhilarating, high-stakes combat action. A fresh character, Yakumo, will have to navigate the metropolis alongside Ryu, introducing innovative fighting techniques and strategies for players to conquer.
Ninja Gaiden 4 is confirmed for a Fall 2025 release.
Here’s another way to phrase it:
Hold on! There’s more! Alongside this exciting news, Team Ninja has unveiled Ninja Gaiden 2 Black – a revamped version of the 2008 game, using Unreal Engine 5. You can play it on Xbox Game Pass starting today.
South of Midnight
The upcoming video game, titled “South of Midnight,” hails from Compulsion Games, a studio owned by Xbox. Recently, both Xbox and Compulsion Games have intensified promotional efforts for this title, including the release of a documentary in November that delved into its creation process. Today, during Developer_Direct, additional details about the game were revealed through a three-minute story trailer. This captivating clip provides insight into our main character, Hazel, and her connection to the mythical beings of the Deep South.
From where I stand, it’s announced that “South of Midnight” will be dropping on April 8th. This exciting adventure is available on three platforms: Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox app on Windows PC, and Steam. What’s more, players who opt for the Premium edition can gain early access from April 3rd!
Doom: The Dark Ages
At the 2024 Xbox Summer Showcase, it was officially unveiled that id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages is the eagerly awaited sequel to 2020’s DOOM Eternal. Although there has been a lot of hype around South of Midnight, DOOM: The Dark Ages has mostly been kept under wraps until now. With the recent launch of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Bethesda has some flexibility in their marketing timeline to promote DOOM more openly.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
At the 2024 Summer Showcase season, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was first unveiled, similar to DOOM: The Dark Ages. However, unlike DOOM and South of Midnight, this upcoming RPG isn’t developed or published by Xbox. Instead, it is developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive. During the development process, Xbox provided a sneak peek at Clair Obscur, offering insights through commentary from Sandfall Interactive about how they created the game’s compelling narrative and unique world.
Over the course of four years, the narrative for Clair Obscur 33 was carefully crafted to convey a complex, somber narrative centered around an impending existential danger, exploring themes of sorrow and mourning.
