In the upcoming seasons, two classic real-time strategy games from Xbox, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Mythology: Retold, will make their way to the PlayStation 5 platform. According to recent updates from Xbox, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is expected in Spring, while Age of Mythology: Retold is set for release in March 2025.
Of course, these games offer cross-platform compatibility, allowing players on Xbox, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5 to play together. Updates will roll out simultaneously across all platforms. Additionally, PlayStation users can look forward to purchasing the upcoming expansion, Immortal Pillars, which introduces a refreshed Chinese faction in Age of Mythology: Retold.
World’s Edge, a team under Xbox Game Studios, oversees the development and collaboration with other developers to revamp older games in the Age of Empires series, as well as creating fresh titles for this renowned franchise. In recent years, they have released Definitive Editions of Age of Empires, Age of Empires 2, and Age of Empires 3, while also working on Age of Empires 4 and a comprehensive remake of Age of Mythology.
In my assessment of Age of Mythology: Retold, I noted that it not only does a superb job of updating the original game but also sets the stage for future improvements and developments. I am excited to invest many more hours into Age of Mythology: Retold, and I can’t wait to see the upcoming Pantheons that will be introduced over the coming months.
Xbox games are moving over to other platforms in force
Following Xbox’s announcement, it has been revealed that Forza Horizon 5 by Playground Games will be available on PlayStation 5 during Spring 2025. Additionally, a version of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle from Bethesda Softworks and MachineGames for PlayStation 5 is in development, with an estimated release date in the first half of this year.
Microsoft’s Xbox is broadening its influence, making games from PlayStation and Nintendo platforms available as the company aims to increase its financial gains. Several of the upcoming exclusive Xbox games will also be launched simultaneously on the PlayStation 5, such as DOOM: The Dark Ages from id Software.
As an analyst, I’ve observed that Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer emphasizes the importance of continuous innovation in gaming hardware. He envisions that this innovative approach will serve as a compelling reason for gamers to opt for Xbox hardware over other alternatives in the future.
