Traveling through Mexico in a vehicle adorned with Xbox insignia while Halo tunes fill the air, it’s hard not to find the presence of Forza Horizon 5 on the PlayStation 5 somewhat extraordinary.

Indeed, if one has followed the open-world racing genre for some time, they might already be acquainted with the game in question, given its age. However, for those who haven’t explored this series before, it could be argued that PlayStation players may have missed an engaging experience, yet it also depends on their personal gaming preferences and experiences.

As a gamer, I can confidently say that it’s an amazing choice, given its dominance in its genre with an awe-inspiring open world to traverse and incredibly responsive driving mechanics. However, after all these years, there have been some remarkable competitors such as The Crew Motorfest and Need for Speed Unbound that have certainly filled the void.

Regardless of the commendable efforts shown by other contenders, it’s evident now that Forza Horizon has been outpacing them throughout.

In this new installment of the open-world racing series, narrative depth has been replaced by an enhanced focus on the driving experience itself. The setting is a racing event held in Mexico, where you, a celebrated automotive prodigy, find yourself as a participant.

The game starts swiftly without much pause, maintaining its high pace most of the time. Initially, you explore diverse vehicle categories over varying landscapes, establishing a relaxed and enjoyable driving atmosphere.

To begin with, it can be truly overwhelming due to the abundance of events scattered all over the extensive map. As you progress in the game, you might unlock dozens or even hundreds more events, which become available when you hit specific player level milestones and access various hubs within the Horizon festival. Gazing at the map after several hours of gameplay can be quite intimidating.

The game moves at such a fast pace that it might be challenging to fully grasp all the options available. In essence, it features various event categories, including street races, drag races, off-road adventures, and publicity stunts – envision speed bumps and enormous jumps.

On top of everything, FH5 offers a variety of online and player-created events. These include time-limited events contributing to your seasonal progress, collaboration areas where you can team up with others to accomplish smaller tasks, and many additional features.

The game is overflowing with numerous elements, making it occasionally confusing. But as you adapt to Forza Horizon 5’s unyielding variety of activities, the feeling of liberation and enjoyment emerges, transforming it into an authentic automotive playground.

The events we discussed earlier provide a sense of accomplishment when checked off, despite the occasional inconsistency in AI challenge. Nevertheless, the racing experience is captivating, mainly due to the top-notch driving mechanics that form the core of the game.

This game masterfully blends simulation and arcade elements, providing an enjoyable experience that requires strategic braking and precise racing lines, while still allowing for exciting, slide-filled moments. Remarkably, each of the numerous vehicles offers a unique driving experience, yet they all maintain their individual characteristics.

The vehicle performs well on both paved roads and off-road trails, as the world abounds in such landscapes. Mexico is a stunning country to discover, boasting a diverse array of attractions – charming towns with winding paths, mysterious ruins hidden within swamps and jungles, and a massive volcano that provides an exhilarating descent experience.

Without a doubt, the game appears visually stunning. We primarily played in the performance setting, which gives an impression of consistently smooth 60 frames per second, and the visual quality never wavered, maintaining a pristine image. The quality mode typically offers higher resolution at the cost of frame rate, but it remains playable. However, we suggest opting for the performance mode due to its smoother feel, with only minor differences in graphic quality.

In essence, after you get past the initial flood of hours, this place offers a wealth of options for exploration. Beyond the numerous races and activities, there’s constantly changing seasonal content, a broad range of car adjustments and personalization, and the opportunity to design and share liveries, events, and other content with fellow enthusiasts.

The game offers an impressive array of racing features, making it one of the best options you might find. Despite having a complex map, finicky user interface, and excessive chatter from non-player characters, it delivers a compelling experience – a racer that stands out for its wide range of options and genuine enjoyment factor.
