Xbox’s SECRET Weapon Shocks Industry!

Microsoft‘s most recent financial report indicates a significant surge in the popularity of their Game Pass service. This increase was highlighted by Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, during the webcast of the report: “In total, Game Pass achieved a new quarterly high for revenue and expanded its PC subscriber base by more than 30% as we aim to boost fully paid subscribers.

The progress made is truly remarkable since the service had seemingly reached a standstill, or a plateau as some experts called it. Notably, two games are said to have hit this milestone. The first one is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which was the best-selling game in 2024. Moreover, Nadella confirmed that it also set a new record for the largest launch in the series’ history.

In the current quarter, Black Ops 6 became the best-selling game for both Xbox and PlayStation, surpassing all other games in the series with the most number of initial players since the franchise started.

Achieving new peaks for players is a remarkable feat for a series with over two decades under its belt. Microsoft, after spending $69 billion on Activision/Blizzard, hoped to witness sustained growth from this long-standing franchise, and it appears that strategy is bearing fruit. It wasn’t just Call of Duty that saw significant numbers; other games also experienced a surge in popularity.

Later on, Nadella commented, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle received overwhelmingly positive feedback from audiences, with over four million people having already experienced it. It’s quite impressive, considering this might be the beginning of a series that could continue in the future, given its popularity. Even our in-house critic was impressed by it.

In summary, Microsoft’s gaming profits primarily stem from their platform services. Today, they announced a 7% decrease in gaming revenue compared to the same period last year, ending December 31, 2025. Interestingly, hardware sales saw a substantial drop of 29%. However, content and service revenues increased by 2%, helping to balance out the overall losses.

The news follows reports that Microsoft spent more than $450 million on games during December, making it the largest game publisher globally. With Game Pass subscriptions reaching new peaks, particularly in the lucrative PC market where Sony is now focusing, things are getting increasingly competitive. In a move announced today, Sony has decided to relax their PSN rules as a gesture towards the PC gaming community.

It’s not surprising that both companies are aiming for the PC market, given its recent surge while console sales have plateaued. With an increasing number of developers choosing to work on PC platforms, Microsoft and Sony will persist in their competition for dominance across any device they can capture, be it consoles, computers, or mobile devices. The battlefield is wide open.

It’s unpredictable where Microsoft is heading, but it’s difficult to deny they will likely persist on their existing course. Their strategy of developing multi-platform games for PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch has consistently set new benchmarks for what defines a successful generation in gaming.
