XDefiant Producer Says There Are “No Plans to Shut Down After Season 4”

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen more than a few promising titles falter and ultimately vanish into obscurity. So, when I heard rumors about XDefiant being on its last legs, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of familiar sadness. But then, Mark Rubin, the executive producer himself, took to Twitter to dispel those rumors. Now, I’ve learned to take game developers’ words with a grain of salt, especially when they say their game isn’t going anywhere.

Over the past few years, Ubisoft’s list of underperforming games from a commercial standpoint has become quite extensive, and XDefiant is one of the recent additions to this list in 2024. After multiple postponements, it was finally released earlier this year as a free-to-play first-person shooter. Initially, it appeared to have a promising start, but ongoing problems and a rapidly dwindling player base have led to widespread conjecture about its future prospects.

Despite some rumors suggesting that XDefiant has underperformed at Ubisoft and may be shutting down after its fourth season, executive producer Mark Rubin assures players there’s no need for concern. He shared on Twitter that the development team is actively working on enhancing the game’s fundamental technical aspects, with plans already in place for post-Season 4 updates. Additionally, Rubin mentioned that Ubisoft intends to step up marketing efforts after Season 4, aiming to attract new players and re-engage those who may have taken a break.

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to clarify that I myself have been part of discussions about our future plans beyond Season 4. We’re currently pouring our efforts into enhancing the technical aspects, such as the netcode, and expanding content for Seasons 3 and 4. The reason our numbers might seem lower is because we’ve minimized marketing to give our team the space to refine the game. However, once we’ve made significant improvements, we plan to increase our marketing efforts to attract new players and welcome back those who may have left.

The game “XDefiant” can be played on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and personal computers. It’s currently in the middle of its second phase of additional content following its launch, which began last month.

It’s unequivocally confirmed that we won’t cease operations post-Season 4. In fact, I attended discussions about our Year 2 strategy just last week. However, our current priority lies in enhancing the technical aspects (specifically, the netcode) and expanding content for future seasons.
