XDefiant Reportely in Danger of Losing Support at Ubisoft

As a gamer with a decade of experience under my belt, I’ve seen the ebb and flow of the gaming industry, and I must say, I’m quite concerned about Ubisoft’s latest offering, XDefiant. After a promising start, it seems the game is struggling to maintain its player base, which isn’t an uncommon tale in this ever-evolving world of online gaming.

According to reports, publisher Ubisoft is dissatisfied with the performance of their multiplayer shooter game XDefiant and may decide to discontinue it if more players don’t join. After passing through several beta testing phases in 2023, Ubisoft launched XDefiant at the end of May 2024. Initially, the game performed well as a free-to-play shooter, but player numbers have been rapidly declining since then. Now, Ubisoft is reassessing the situation and contemplating future actions for the game.

Based on Insider Gaming reports, Ubisoft is planning to allow XDefiant to continue running until the end of Season 3 in order to attract more players and revenue before making major changes to its support structure. The specifics of Season 3 haven’t been revealed yet, but it’s anticipated to start in November and extend into early 2025. Currently, Ubisoft has confirmed that plans for Season 4 are underway, but it seems these plans might be subject to change.

According to Insider Gaming, there’s been a shift in enthusiasm for XDefiant within Ubisoft. Employees working on the game at Ubisoft San Francisco are reportedly concerned about potential job cuts and expressing dissatisfaction with their studio leadership. It’s important to note that Ubisoft San Francisco underwent layoffs less than a month ago, which affected the XDefiant team directly.

This year appears to be challenging for Ubisoft, according to many reports. Although games like “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown” received positive reviews, Ubisoft hasn’t had a major success yet. Games such as “Skull and Bones”, “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora”, and more recently “XDefiant” have all been considered underperformers over the past year. Recently, “Star Wars Outlaws” received a moderate response from critics, but it remains unclear if this has affected its sales.

In November this year, Ubisoft plans to launch “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, their anticipated blockbuster game of 2024. If for some reasons “Shadows” fails to meet expectations, it could potentially raise more significant worries about Ubisoft and the health of their future lineup.
